Looking for a .22 for fun at the range

The 46 year old MK I still functions flawlessly and shoots like a lazer.

Unfortunately the currently produced ones are no were near as good :(

Of the ones listed I rank them:

Buckmark
Neos
Ruger
P22.

We've got all the above, but my favorite is the S&W M22A. Add in their unmatched customer service and support and it can't be beat!

The only redeeming feature of the P22 is its a very nice size to be a practice analog for a subcompact 9mm pistol but the fact that the safety rotates the "wrong" way and that it lacks a decocker, makes the analog way less than ideal. I guess the P22 would be good if you want a small pistol to mount a suppressor on, but that adds and extra ~$800+ and 2-6 month wait to the deal.

The 22/45 is a good choice. the ergonomics are really good, if a bit top heavy, and it's very accurate. I'd suggest buying the aftermarket mkII bushing that eliminates the silly magazine disconnect safety. Once that is removed, it's totally within reason to disassemble and reassemble in under a minute. I'm sure I can detail strip mine in under a minute. the polymer frame also means that you probably won't need a hammer to seperate the frame from the receiver. It just takes a couple of times to figure out how it works...the magazine dance to get around the disconnect safety was the hardest part. :fire:

edit: removing the mag safety also makes seating the magazine easier. I had a heck of a time getting the mags to lock in until I removed the safety. It would look like the mag was seated correctly, but then it starts to work its way out. It seats fully right away once it doesn't have to fight the extra spring.

I always wondered why Ruger never made any other calibers using the pattern of the Mk-I/II/III... Yeah, I know that the .22 is a rimfire cartridge, but they could have easily modified the action to handle centerfire cartridges. I'm not a big fan of the 22/45 model that they came out with. I guess I just don't like the look of it since the old model had been around so many years and I just have a problem with a company messing with the classics...

the slide doesn't have enough mass for a much larger round, and recoil would be pretty stout, pretty quick.

My favorite on your list is the MkII. Tactical Solutions has a great light weight barrel for it also.

Too bad this is the order from goofiest looking to best.

Neos

The Rugers and Buckmark are both tried & true workhorses with reliability and accuracy being the rule rather than exception. The Neos I have no exp with . The P22 is a fun and lighweight "plinker", only comes with one mag though and they (mags) are $30 everywhere.I love mine b/c the short barrell keeps standard bulk ammo subsonic.Service life however may be questionable.

It's too bad that they're so uncommon because no one believes me when I tell them how good they are. I've shot Rugers, Brownings, Neos, P22s, etc, etc, etc, and this one outshoots all but the most extensively modified semis. Out of the box, I think it's the best .22 semi ever made. Plus, just look at the thing, it is a definite conversation starter at the range.
