Hi everyone , It's great to be back,
looking for a scope to put top of my Savage 110 hunter for target shooting, something that
you would shoot at 100 yd. some people say get a fixed scope not a variable, so I'm asking?
does anyone have a scope that they would recommend? I don't want to spend a lot,.
Thank you all for responding to my request.

My recommendations to check out;
Vortex 6-24x50 Diamondback Tactical, $400. For $500 the Viper 6.5x20x50 and the new Venom 5-25x56mm.
Sightron S-Tac 4-20x50mm $370
SWFA 16x42mm "Super Sniper" $300 (fixed magnification)
Burris Fullfield E1 6.5-20x50mm $490
I would like to try out some Athlons.

These are knocking you out of most hunting situations and I was favoring higher magnifications. I also lean towards more options with exposed turrets and mil type reticles.
If I think of anything else or have a better idea I'll chime in. I don't care for much for Bushnell's contributions at this price point and Nikon isn't a option when I shop.

I'd skip the Vortex diamondback, alot of nice features, but the glass itself is pretty "meh".

Vortex's upper tiers are very good optics, but the Crossfire and Diamondback line, I'd pass on for something else.

In that price range, I was really impressed with Leupold's VX-Freedom line.
Arken, and Primary Arms both have a number of fans and glowing reviews as well if you want something more feature leadened than the Leupold.

I have an Athlon Neos, 3x9x40 on one of my rifles.I's about $250 and more than enough for 100 to 300yds if you don't mind "Made in China".
I'd go with Burris E-1 or Fullfield II, which used to be made in USA, but now made in Phillipines.
Optics Planet has the 6.5-20x50 Fullfield II for about $220. I have this one on one of my 30-06.

Always buy glass on sale, and always check "sale" prices other places.

This is the best advice.

Unless there's an optic that ticks every box and brings something to the table nothing else does, cruise the closeouts.

I paid full price for my Leupold because I had very specific criteria, for a lightweight hunting optic.

I snagged a deal for my target rifle with a Crimson Trace, because my criteria was looser.

I'm very happy with both choices.

the SWFA has a 20 power fixed scope that I was looking at , the other scopes at 32 or 35 power are over 1,000 dollers
I shoot at a 5 inch bull-eye target , there are 8 targets to a sheet of paper. Right now I'm using a Vortex 6-24x42 variable scope
and I don't like it.

I just go target shooting now, getting to old to be walking around in woods.
Then Id probably go with something in the 16-20 power range. My experience is that it really dosent matter what you pick in the 400 dollar range youll get a decent optic....not to say there arnt some outliers, but for the most part 300-500 dollars seems to be a really good range for optics.

I recently picked up an Athlon Talos 4.5-14x44 with MIL IR reticle for my AR 308, and like it a lot. The glass is very clear, and the first focal plane is great for target shooting. They’re under $300 and have a lifetime warranty.

I forgot to add that the adjustments are very positive and repeatable. I’ve owned a couple Primary Arms scopes, and like Athlon scopes more. The adjustments, glass, and warranty are great.

I have/use 3 sightron s2 36x42's. 1 crosshair, 1 target dot, 1 target dot with lockers. They flat out work, bought 1 of them and liked it enough that the leupold and weavers went down the road to fund the other 2 s2's and the 20x.

FWIW:
I sightron s2 20x42 on my silhouette rifles. And a 4-12x40 bushnell with brc on my standing slihouette pistol.

The fixed power SWFA scopes are hard to beat for the money. Probably the best entry level target scope you can buy.

Buy SWFA SS 6x42 Tactical 30mm Riflescopes at SWFA.com - SWFA Outdoors

They make versions selling at $300 in 6X, 10X, 12X, 16X, and 20X. As well as a similar 3-9X42 variable, but it is $600. They have been on back order since Covid, but the 6X is available. I own 2 of the fixed 6X scopes and one 3-9X42

He says he is shooting at 100 yards, 6X is plenty. I'm not opposed to a variable and it would normally be my 1st choice, but at his budget I think this is the most scope for the money.

I've used my 6X at 600 yards and managed 3/4 MOA groups with it. Even if they were available I'd avoid anything above 12X in this scope. I have friends with the 20X scope and it isn't nearly as clear as the lower powers.

Best $250 I've spent on my ss10 for a scope, there stupid tuff as well, I can vouch for that.
