I'm looking to buy a handgun and i seems like out of state prices are often $100 or more less than prices I've seen here in MD. I remember seeing someone mention an FFL in the state that will do transfers for $15. Does anyone know of the place or have a good FFL they can recommend?

On a related topic, why are MD prices so high? Is there some sort of tax that inflates prices?
 
I think it has something to do with the ballistic fingerprinting BS, but other than that, I'm not sure. You also have to pay an additional $30 for an "internal lock" on new guns made after 2003, but that's not part of the advertized price.
 
I would say prices are high because of the ballistic fingerprinting and the handgun roster. Then toss in the $30-$50 internal lock (if the gun doesn't have one built in). All these hoops just make the prices jump. Just remember that next legislative session!
 
Well, the CZ75 I looked at last night was $500 and doesn't require an internal lock because it's a pre-'03. That still puts it at at least $50 more than in other states.
 
Another question for the folks who know: If I buy a post-'03 gun and have it shipped to an FFL in state (like Chris), do I have to buy an "internal lock" to go with it and pay sales tax?

Contact Chris or his dad for your transfer.

They have helped me a few times with purchase transfers, and are also experienced gunsmiths. Chris helped get my AR un-screwed.

They can also give you the low-down on the various MD-regs, the "internal lock" nonsense, and what you are "allowed" :rolleyes: to purchase so that you can stay legal here in the "Free State." :rolleyes:

Prices are much cheaper if you buy from out-of-state, even with the transfer fees and shipping. Used CPO Sig P226 = $460 shipped from Ordnance Outsellers + $35 transfer + $22 direct-buy VisuLock,

vs.
Used P226 in Rockville gun shop, selling for $700 + tax + $20-$30 gun store MSP paperwork fee + $25-$40 gun store price VisuLock :eek: . . .

First of all the handgun has to approved by MDSP, and be listed on the Handgun Roster. List can be found here: http://www.mdsp.org/services/handgun.asp

if the handgun was manufactured post '03 it has to have an internal lock installed prior to transfer. List can be found here: http://www.mdsp.org/downloads/Handgun_Safety_devices.pdf

Visualock's and interbore locks can be installed in most revolvers and semi auto pistols. Omega locks can be installed in most auto pistols. Once you take possesion of the handgun you never have to use the lock again.

If it is a new handgun a factory supplied fired shell casing has to be supplied, regardless of date manufactured. Used handgun's don't require fired shell casings.

If your buying a 44Magnum with 7.5" to 9" barrel I will gladly lend you my visualock. I used to have a better selection to lend out, but most have not been returned.
 
pcf, it's really an issue of whether the $419 CZ75 SA on Gunbroker ends up being cheaper after all the fees (lock, transfer, shipping) than the $500 CZ75 SA I looked at yesterday. I don't see CZ on that list, but I know they're legal. It's starting to sound like I'd be better off buying the gun I looked at yesterday.

Does anybody know if I'd have to pay sales tax on the transfered gun?

The only place that charges sales tax for an out of state sale is A&D Pawn. Jessup Pawn and Loan doesn't and a transfer cost $35 (including MDSP fees). It seems that Chris Rhines is the best deal.

$500 + $25tax + $10MDSP fee = $535

$420 + $25Shipping + $30FFL/MDSP + $20Interbore lock = $495

Check out sportingarms.com, kstactical.com or impactguns.com for possibly a better price.

There are a couple of shops in the Frederick area that will do transfers for a reasonable amount, but there is no escaping the $10 state fee. Plus there is no way to get around the laws on cartridge cases and safety lock if the gun was made after those laws were passed. The dealer CAN'T transfer the gun to the buyer unless those laws are complied with, no matter where it came from or how he obtains it.
