A friend of mine at work asked me to look at a revolver her grandmother gave to her. It is an older Taurus Model 65 with a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. Externally it looks a lot like a S&W Model 65 except not as refined. The serial number is 309XX so it seems like an early model from what I can find.

I know S&W's and Rugers very well but I honestly do not know much about Taurus models. Can anyone give me any info on the history of his model, age, and anything else relevent?

Thanks!

I probably can't give you to much of the history or anything like that but I do own an older 65 and its a great shooter and very smooth action. I would suggest replacing the original grips with a Pachmahr (not sure on spelling) grip, makes the grip slimmer and feel better for me at least :). Check out taurusarmed, they will help.

Thanks for the info. I am not registered on taurusarmed.net and I generally try not to register on forums that I don't check often but I will probably do so.

Thanks again,

I've looked in some old gun books, at least back to 1990 anyway, and I don't think anybody knows when Taurus started making or importing the Model 65. The best I can do is from the 1996 Gun Digest 50th Annual Edition.

There are no dates listed for the Model 65. The blurb is short, "Same as the Model 66, except..., etc.", "Imported by Taurus"

For the Model 66 - "Introduced 1978."

I tried a dozen numbers, such as 30900, 30910, 30940, 30950, 30975 and 30999, and got nothing.

"No matches for your serial number were found."

Yeah I tried the search on the Taurus site and it did not come up with anything. Thanks for the info though.
