Hello
I am looking for a pocket carry. Was looking at the Bersa 380 but would like to know my options in a wheel gun. I live in Southern Texas ( hot ) so a pocket piece is what I need. I have a Ruger P89 for the home and a Super RedHawk 44mag 9.5 for target and hunting.

I feel your pain on Texas summers. I'd say look for a Smith or Taurus in either alloy or titanium or scandium. Steel guns are too heavy in a pocket. I have a Taurus M85UL that's quite light at 15 ounces and comfortable. If you have a titanium budget, those things are a few ounces lighter and titanium is a stronger metal, though the M85UL is +P rated and Taurus guns have lifetime warranties.

My gun has an exposed hammer. I prefer a hammer spur on my guns, but a true pocket gun should be hammerless or at least spurless to avoid it hanging on the pocket on the draw. You can train to put your thumb up on the hammer on the draw to avoid this, but it's more pocket friendly without a hammer spur.

I can tell you, the Taurus revolvers, despite what the S&W gun snobs will tell you, are fantastic quality, at least the ones I've owned and shot. I have two at the moment. They have really slick out of the box DA triggers and are accurate as anything from S&W. I've owned Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Taurus, and Rossi revolvers and my favorite has been Taurus, though I can't knock the others, especially the Rugers. Smith and Wesson makes fine firearms, but IMHO they're over-priced and I still don't know what to think about MIM parts and the S&W designed lock. Lots of griping about that, but I don't know if it's well founded or just griping because they "ain't makin' 'em the way they used to. I kinda think the later, but haven't made up my mind on it. I haven't bought a Smith since my M19 25 years ago.

There seems to be a lot of negative opinion of both the MIM parts thing and the frame locks, though. I KNOW Taurus makes fantastic revolvers, so I've decided if I get another NEW revolver in the future, I'll look to Taurus. I'm sorta wanting a good used K frame Smith right now or maybe an older Ruger Speed or Security Six. Want a snub barreled one and would really like a round butt. I won't be pocket carrying it, though, strictly IWB.

My shop has been selling NIB 642s for $299...not a snobby price. As frame locks are generally one of the facts of life anymore that isnt going to change, that isnt a biggie. If it is, get a 342 used somewhere. As for MIM, I cant see a MIM part being made with any more or less quality than any other mass produced steel part. I prefer real steel for looks, but I have guns with MIM parts and have had no gripes.

There arent too many people who have a leg to stand on when they try to talk down the 642. It isnt expensive, it isnt fancy, it's just a plain and reliable tool, which is what it is meant to be and it does it's job well.

I've had a Bersa and it was a great gun, but the 642 was more in line with what I was looking for: heavier bullet, no hammer, less printing.

These 2 have rubber gribs. Does the rubber hang in a pocket? Should they be swapped with after market?

I personally don't like rubber grips on my pocket guns - not only does it tend to make the draw slower, it also tends to rub inside the pocket and irritate my thigh.

I just splurged and put some smooth buffalo horn Eagle grips on my 642.

Suggestions for grips? Should pocket carry have a inside the pocket holster?

Caliber: .38 SPL +P RATED over Caliber: .38 which do you think would be better all around.

Absolutely. Not only should you carry it in a pocket holster, there shouldn't be anything else in the pocket either. If you carry it loose, you run the risk of either gumming up the works with pocket lint, having the gun rotate in the pocket, or getting something caught in the triggerguard with potentially disasterous consequences. Since there is no additional safety, you have to protect that trigger.

The good news is pocket holsters for J frames can be very inexpensive, all it needs to be is something that protects that trigger and "sticks" to the pocket so it doesn't come out when you draw.

As far as caliber goes, get one that's rated for .38 +P to keep your options open. You don't have to shoot it with +P if it bothers you.

Our friend mOntels price of $299 is a most excellent buy.

Now that I read that again, I guess I need to clarify things...

It's not MY shop, it's the shop that I go to. Dont need everyone trying to order one off of me and then having to turn them down. :p

This is the shop: http://www.tannerssportcenter.com

He does sell on GunBroker but I dont have his account name there on me but it's something along the line of "raytanner"-something or other. They had been on sale for a few months but I havent been there in a while.

I also recommend a pocket holster to keep the gun vertical. Before I got one it would turn sideways and be near impossible to draw in a decent time, esp when sitting. I carry lead 158gr SWCHP loads.

For pocket carry I recently converted from a 642 to a 340SC.
It costs about $200 more to lose 3 ounces. But, for me, it is worth it. Especially when I'm wearing a suit with very light weight, thin trousers.

When I lived in Eagle Pass I carried one of two J frames in a pocket holster made by a back street leather shop in Neuevo Laredo. The best twenty bucks I ever spent......Essex

Something like this will do you just fine.

From one South Texas native to another,

S&W J-frame snubbie, dont get any better than this.....

used mine daily with barami grips and tyler t-grips till i retired it to transform into a "pretty boy" gun.

pic in the Pr0n thread

I have a Smith 442 and have been pleased with it overall. They come with the wood grips vs the rubber ones for the 642. Slides a bit easier out of the pocket. Crimson laser grips are quite popular though.

s & w 637 airweight. in the phoenix summers it is perfect, heck i forget it is
even there sometimes.........

I've carried a Taurus 85 Multi-alloy (aluminum frame, titanium barrel shroud and cylinder) for several years. It's a .38 spl.

Really light which is what you want in a pocket pistol. Once I had stouter springs installed, it's been very reliable too..
Since pocket is my most frequent mode of carry, this is the gun that goes most often.

I've two pocket holsters...a Galco and a Mickas. Both work quite well.

I've thought about having the hammer bobbed, but I do like single action...and although the hammer does catch on my pocket occasionally during a draw (more often with the Galco holster), that's not been enough of a problem to modify the gun.
