I am wanting a new handgun and silencer. I am looking for suggestions as I have just started to do research into what are good setups. It can be in 9mm, .40, or .45.

1st make sure they are legal in your state. Cans are not permited in mine.

The only guy who can make the right determination for you is ... you. All the good advice that you receive from well-meaning folks on gun boards or from behind the counter at the local shop or the big box store aren't worth a hoot in hell unless the gun fits your hand and eye. And the only way you are going to be able to determine that is to take some guns to the range and start running some ammo through them. So ... go to a range that rents guns and give some a try. Invite your gun-owning friends along and have them bring some of their favorites. Before long, you'll narrow it down to one or two guns. And that's where the real work starts. Be sure to run enough ammo through the guns you like best so that by the time you are done, you are absolutely, positively, 100% certain that you have found the exactly correct gun for you. And even then, it'll pay you to test it again, and again.

Don't be in a hurry. Take your time. Good things, and the right gun, come to those who don't rush to make a bad decision.

Beretta 92 is one of the easiest guns to suppress, as it doesn't require a recoil booster and the stock barrel is long enough to thread. Really it all depends on how much you are willing to spend, also whether you want a wet or dry suppressor.

Probably the cheapest, most convenient route would be a glock suppressor package from AWC:

If this is your first suppressor I would start out with a 22LR. Most people who have no experiance with suppressors in real life are disappointed when they hear a centerfire suppressor for the first time. The "Hollywood" quiet isn't there. A good quality 22 will get you the closest. 22 cans are also at the bottom price wise. If you can find someone who has silencers that will let you shoot and hear what they sound like first.
Just for reference I statrted with a 45 supressor first. I now have one 22 suppressor and a second on the way. I enjoy the 45 suppressor but "really" like the 22 suppressors more and wish I had started there first.

go for and HK USP .45 suppressed. i was fondling one earlier in the week.... f-in awesome! if your gonna go down that road go all the way.

Any suppressed semi-auto pistol shooting subsonic ammo should be hearing safe. They can also be made less noisy by adding water to the can, the 45 auto cans mostly likely will need to be shot wet to be hearing safe. They will not be quiet, expect greater than 125 decibels even when using a good silencer. I also think that starting with a 22lr pistol or rifle is the best way to go as they are less noisy ( as low as 115 db) and can be much less expensive.

Most recoil operated pistols will need a nielsen device (recoil booster, or linear de-coupler) attached to the back of the silencer to ensure proper operation. The Baretta 92 is one that will not as the barrel does not tilt when the slide moves back. Adding any additional weight to the end of a barrel that tilts when the slide moves back slows down the slide too much to extract the spent round and chamber the next one, unless the silencer is very light (<6 ounces) and has a very lightweight slide spring.

I made a light weight silencer for my Browning HP and had to load the 147 subsonic ammo up to 1050 fps (above manual specs) and cut down the 8 pound spring to ensure adequate reliability.

Check out the forums at http://www.subguns.com and http://www.silencertalk.com for more info. The Silencer Talk website also have a list of manufacturers. Subguns has lists of dealers in your state.
