My weight fluctuates a lot but even when I don't have love handles I have sciatica, pointy hip bones and a lot of muscular tension in my thighs and hips. I also have to wear my belts quite tight because of my straight waist. I used to like pancake holsters before the sciatica but my last long hike with my Redhawk Alaskan .454 taught me otherwise. I like an OC holster with some drop that puts the butt of the gun anywhere between even with the top of the belt and an inch above. Like the authentic buscaderos from 1880-1920 (not the later below the belt Hollywood versions). For a full size or long slide auto gun like my 6" Witness Hunter that's 4-4.5" lower than most contemporary holsters.

I'm using a Simply Rugged Cuda pancake holster for my Witness with the belt straps normally used for inside the waistband on the outside to affect a 4.25" drop. The addition of a 1/8" leather thong thigh strap worn loose provides friction that holds the holster in a draw with no restriction whatsoever on movement and the weight of the gun on my belt not digging into my body even when sitting.

Now I'm looking for magazine holders. Just like the butt of the gun I would like the butt of the magazine no more than an inch above the top of my belt, not the bottom third of the magazine centered on the belt like so many contemporary designs--basically like knife scabbards used to be with the opening level with or below the bottom of the belt.

I'm looking for quality leather that will match the quality of my simply Rugged Holster and will fit a 1.5"x0.29" thick gun belt.

I can't think of any real low riding pouches right now, but I'll keep looking. While I do that, take a minute to think about the belt as the fulcrum point of your mag pouch.

The stuff above the belt (your love handles) will lever that part of the mag pouch/mag which is above the belt out and the part of the mag pouch that is below the the belt in towards your hip, while your hips (usually when sitting down) will leverage the the part of the pouch below the belt out and the part of the mag/pouch above the belt in towards your love handles.

To keep your hips from levering the part the part above the belt into your side, you'd need a pouch that carries the base plate/pad of the mag no higher than the top of the belt. I think that's what you're looking for. This is a style that I can't think of anybody that makes one, yet. My initial searches are focusing on "Wild Bunch" or cowboy type stuff and duty type gear, though you may have to find a true custom maker to produce something like that.

On the other hand, to keep your love handles from levering the bottom of the pouch into your hips you need a pouch that bottoms out at the bottom of the belt, and that is a fairly common mag pouch design. For instance, the High Noon mag pouches (though there are many others, this one just comes to mind) has basically nothing below the bottom of the belt and your love handles would simply lever the mag away from your side and nothing is there to poke you in the hip, at least that's what it does on my body. However, your shape could be completely different and it's possible I'm misunderstanding your issue.

Let me try to explain some more. Stuff on the belt, esp when it has a radius off curvature larger than me forms a pressure point on my hips. That is why I prefer my holster to hang from the belt not be centered on it and rigidly attached.

I understand that, and a pancake would certainly cause that pressure simply due to their design.

A Nelson #1 Professional like the Milt Sparks 55BN ( https://www.miltsparks.com/products-55-bn.php ) or Galco Avenger ( https://www.galcogunleather.com/avenger-belt-holster_8_4_1023.html ) would be less likely to cause that issue than a pancake like the Simply Rugged Cuda that you are wearing. However, are you finding the same issue with a mag pouch, especially a single mag pouch, that is significantly smaller and carrying such a lighter load than a holster with a huge gun like a Ruger Alaskan or an EAA Witness Hunter?

In any case, are the pouches we've recommended along the lines of what you're looking for, or have we completely missed the mark?

Why not just give Simply Rugged " Tom " I think his name is a call and just have him make you what you want

I think sag with a leather belt is part of my problem. I've get a heavy steel core gun belt on order. Will update.

My steel belt had to be sent back for the next bigger size but I IWB carried a CZ P07 to dinner and a movie tonight with no pain using an Alien Gear 3.5 IWB holster and a stiff nylon belt (God bless ubiquitous invalid 4-229 signage). I found that at maximum forward cant the holser at 4:30 and gun at 4 fit between the sciatic nerve and a trigger point on the hip. I did a little hamstring stretch before I left the house and clenched my buttock a few times when I started to sense the weight/pressure.

It was an incredibly comfortable holster despite my tight hip muscles from a previous injury. I have been working a bit on my trigger points with my wife's Hitachi while in a hamstring stretch -- kind of simillar to what the PT guys are currently doing to unlock my shoulder (but no current referral for my hip).

My proper steel core gun belt arrived yesterday and what a difference it makes. I can IWB a compact at 4:00 with a lot of rake and split the difference between the sciatic nerve and pressure points on my hip. I can also carry and compact (and probably full sized) "high and tight" above the sore spots. I still can't carry my dual stack 6" barrel 10mm in a pancake (too much pressure on trigger points). The big dual mag holder is now fine as well with a belt with zero sag.

What I'm doing is using the pancake IWB straps as OWB drop straps. The holster would actually be covered by a flannel shirt with a tail but I only intend to OC with the big 10mm anyway.
