I've been thinking about using my 30-40 Krag on deer in the fall.
It cycles 150fmjs well but struggles with round nose flat points.
I'm leaning towards the 168 amax or 150 rn 30-30 bullet.
I've read people like the amax for long range and was thinking if I'm starting at 2200 ish it would be the same impact velocity.
Would you load 150 rn to 30-30 velocity or 168 amax.

More than likely, the throat was designed for long heavies, a 168 btip at 2400fps is still effective at 500 yds, if running a 150 gr bullet, I'd look at similar btip designs rather than short bullets, one gain would be something like a Speer or Sierra flat base spitzer, they've never been bad on accuracy, and will get the job done

Check out this website

He goes in depth about most calibers.
Ballistically anything used innthrn300 savage would work well for your krag so that’s what I linked above.

As a side not I have found Speer to be the softest cc bullet. That’s where I would start. Specifically the 150 gr btsp.

I've run the 150 fmj with surprising accuracy. I won't be shooting beyond 125yds. I was thinking bullets not made to hold up to 308/30-06 velocity would be ideal. I have a pile of 168s and 150s for my wife's 30-30 and my 308 that I target shoot with.

The btips are designed to expand at 1800 fps, another option would be the sst, which will expand at 1600 fps, actually quite ideal here, as at higher velocities they to grenade quite a bit more than I consider ideal for anything other than a good broadside or frontal shot will deliver. If the components ever become available, keep your eyes out for the browning bxr bullets, THEY DETONATE at point blank at modern velocities, but being factory only in chamberings not including the krag (last I checked) they may be moot here.

I have some Speer 165 btsp if you want to try them. I shot those in my old 06 and they do tend to be pretty squishy as previously suggested.

I think @horsey300 is right your rifles probably ment for longer bullets. You may want to try the subsonic nosler 220 ballistic tip. If the tip profile will feed that should give you plenty of expansion

my late father used a light weight 98 mauser he had rebarreled into 7x57 mauser with a 4x weaver scope and killed a boad load of deer with a 154gr round nose bullet at 2400 fps.

That's the first bullet mentioned in that 300 Savage article and one of my friends swears by them.

They are a solid performer. I've got a couple boxes and switched to 178eldxs. So if you want a box I'll send u one.

I figured I'd throw in the npptpartition, and hornadys round nose 180s as some folks have an easier time getting them to feed (I'd include the grand slam, Vulcan, and oryx but don't reckon they're needed in a slow, heavy for deer situation). Hornadys round nose might be one of my first choices if the 165s don't feed well for you.

My brother uses partitions in the 30-06 and 6mm Remington they do work well. The 180 round nose struggles to open up even at 308 velocity. So far the only issue I have with pointed bullets is when I drop the nose into the hinge mechanism. They cylce smoothly.

Good deal, I know my krag would OCCASIONALLY sheer the edge of the tip of a spitzer, and for some, that's a bigger deal than others, but never bothered me personally. If you get the chance to post some chronograph numbers on your final load, I wouldn't complain, I've never run anything under 180s in mine and you've proven lighter is doable, as ashamed as I am to turn down the excuse for a new rifle in the near future, that load would forestall the youth .260/.243 configuration I'd been contemplating for my oldest!

Starting load of IMR4064 and 168 amax.
Milk jug splattered more than I expected. Bullet did penetrate into the plywood and dirt behind the jug. View attachment 782350 View attachment 782349
Those amax look like they will do the job for you.
I run 162s out of my 7mag, and the 178-208s have been run thru a few different 300s and 30-06s. They have been excellent hunting bullets for me.

I bought my wife a 260, it's an amazing low recoil cartridge.
My chronograph is at my brother's about 4 hrs away. It won't be until April before I see it. I will try to update it then. Starting load recoil in prone was comparable to 150s in a 308.

I settled on 37 gr of IMR4064. This is 50 yds because I struggle with iron sights. The shot to the right was my first one and I knew it wasn't right when the trigger broke.
Dot is a 1" sticky.
Now to patiently wait for November.

Hornady makes - or at least used to - a shorter ogive version of the 150grn SST meant to expand in the 300 savage, should be right in line for your .30-40. Might be worth exploring.

Is this the .308 150 gr RN Interlock ? They are essentially a 30 cal (30-30) RN with a cannalure. I used them for test loads when I was experimenting with a reduced load 30-06.

I could part with some for experimenting if you'd like.

I have the 150rn interlock. It's great in the 30-30. It's the other option I listed.
Did you shoot anything with it?
