I bought a used Remington 521-T that has a globe front sight that I suspect is a Lyman #17 but have no way to tell for sure. I had new a 521-T back in the late’50s but it had what I think is known as a partridge sight on it along with the Lyman aperture micrometer rear sight. There are insert kits for several Lyman globe sights but I have no way of knowing the difference between them. I’d like something other than the insert that I have now, a crossbar with circle in the middle, I understand they have different inserts with different size circles for use with different size bullseye diameter and distances as well as 2 with different size post inserts. I’m not going to be competitive shooting with it so I’d like to be able to change the insert or maybe just remove it and put a partridge post on instead. Any idea where I’d find one of those? Brownell’s doesn’t have anything. Haven’t checked Numrich/ Gun Parts yet but that’s my next place to look.

Go to the Lyman web site,or check on E-bay for the inserts.

I found inserts on several sites, Lyman and Ebay included, the problem is, there are 3 or more models of globe sights and they each have different insert sets. They run from $25 to $50 a set. I have no way of determining which model I have. I assume there are differences in the size of the different model numbers but find no information, specifications, or model number on my sight. I’d like to get it right the first time.
    Thanks anyway!

To the best of my knowledge, all of the Lyman Globe front sights use the same inserts. Check the bottom of the sight, there should be a model # stamped there. All of mine have a stamp model#, and I use the same inserts in my low sights and the tall sights.

Under the dovetail? Maybe my sight isn’t a Lyman? Looks like what I see on the Lyman site.
Looking at the Lyman and a couple other sites it becomes apparent to me that there is more difference between sights than height. There are sets of inserts with different part numbers for different model number sights. There are a couple more numbers besides a 17. Don’t recall what they are, I’d check but I’ll loose this post if I do. Judging from that I’d say they are not all the same. There are different models, for example a # 17 sight, which designates height, still a #17. You may have variants of a #17 that all use the same inserts. If the sights and inserts were all the same I doubt they would list different part numbers for different insert kits for different model number sights. I’ll check for a number again. I’d be curious what the ID and OD of the sight is of a known model number. If you have what you know is a #17, what does it measure?
    Thanks!

On the bottom of my two Lyman globe sites one is stamped 17 AMI, the other 17ATC. The ATC globe site is their tall sight. the other is a low site. Both have outside diameters of 0.550 and inside diameters of 0.425. They both take the same inserts.

There is nothing stamped on my sight and the insert is a 4 wire unit probably from Lee Shaver. He builds inserts for several brands of sights and has measurements for #17 and I think will fit. Ordered a set last night.
    Thanks for the help!
