All the "jiggling" keeps the powder settled on the baffle.

 

The turret has multiple holes for a reason. My Lyman Turret is a stellar performer for precision rifle loading. Some people like to "crimp" in a separate die. For precision rifle it isn't necessary since the case mouth is merely restored to SAAMI specification. So, you can easily get by with a sizing die and a bullet seating die that restores the case mouth size if using an expander! Not necessary with boat tail bullets! So, placing the powder measure between these two dies with empty holes between them works for me.

Agitating the powder measure during use is desirable to keep the drops precise. Some people attach a separate device for this purpose!

Using the balance beam is a bit of an art. Read the directions carefully! Some recommend that you allow the beam to "swing" and the precise reading is the middle of the up and down swing as long as they are equal distance.

Learn to use your Lyman Turret press it will serve you for a lifetime!

Full disclosure: I also have Dillons for bulk pistol reloading and Hornady's for .223 for banging steel at least once a month, 50-100 rounds!

 

As long as you jiggle it exactly the same each time you rotate the station and/or pull the handle.

 

I loaded with it today. Did it in single stage style. I charged all the cases 1st. Then seated bullets. I had them pre-sized and primed.

 

Did you prime them on the press?

 

No i did it on my RCBS bench primer. I use that when im going to load a lot of cases.

 

I have the Lyman All Amercan 8 (not its full name). I love almost everything about it. Solid, heavy, smooth turret. Use it for all my rifle sizing and brass reforming operations.

Anything having to do with priming/depriming is horrible. Lyman sent me a new priming arm, and it's worse than the one I took out. Good thing the Frankford Arsenal Perfect Prime is an awesome companion to any press.

 

I have a RCBS bench primer also. On the turret I FL size, Small Base resize, seat the bullet. I prime and throw powder off the press.

 

I gave it a try with the priming arm. No good. If it was lower i think it would ok. I agree about the 8 station one too with it's priming system. I took the assy off mine. It gets in the way sometimes. Lee has the best priming arm set up i feel. The RCBS isn't bad either.

 

Good press ...but don't think of it as a "progressive" press .. it is still a single stage ... I tried a bunch of different "ways" when I owned mine ...ended up doing "batch" type loading ... the same as all the other single stage presses I have owned ...

I let a friend have mine as I already owned the Bonanza CoAx ....

 

I agree on the batch loading. I do the same with my Lyman brass smith 8 station presses. My Lee turret is the only one i run in a progressive mode.

 

I have a progressive (Dillon 550) that I use for 9mm and 45acp. Have tool heads for both calibers. Plug and play and a great set up for me as far as pistol goes.

For rifle I'm a little bit more picky. Although the measure on my 550 is accurate enough for pistol all the bouncing around gives me more variation than I care for reloading rifle. So I reload rifle on the turret.

I do have a single stage press in storage. Some say the turret is no better than a single stage for reloading. I disagree.

 

Turrets are nice for not having to swap dies all the time.

 

....or swapping presses all the time.
