Lyman's 49th - 45/70 Data

I own the 48th and it's a good over all manual. It's had a couple of disappointments for me though. The 48th tested out the old version of Rx7 (with the coloured granules) and does not include any H4198 data for 45/70.

My local shops don't have the 49th on the shelf, so I can't leaf through it and see if those powders have been updated/added. Can someone with the 49th fill me in? It'd be worth a pickup for me if Lyman has tested out the current Rx7 and maybe added H4198 to the 45/70 data pages.

49th has data for three different firearm types like the 48th. Data for Ruger#1 and 3 appears to be exactly as the 48th.
Data for 1886 Win and 1895 Marlin they added testing for a Hornady FP 350gr. bullet. Other data for cast and jacketed are the same.
For 1873 Springfield 45-70 data they dropped the Rem 405 SP from their data and added Hornady 350FP and Speer 400 gr FN. For the new bullets they tested IMR-4198, RX7, AA-2015, X-Terminator, H322, IMR-3031, N-135, and Varget.
I didn't check every load but data appears to be the same as the 48th except for the new bullets added.

Thanks for the rundown. Good that they added the 350 data, bad that they didn't cover H4198. It'd be nice to have a point of comparison at 18/28/40k cup for the Hodgdon 18/40k cup data.

Guess I'll have to give 'em a ring and ask if they reprinted data with the old Rx7 from the 48th or if they ran it with the new formulation. They were supposed to be the same but they ain't. The new stuff is hotter, enough to get you in trouble maybe at the top end of the old data.

Most of the times when a top name manual omits a powder for a powder it's because that powder doesn't work well with that caliber. Of course there are exceptions but I've found that to be true in most cases.

In general, yes. But 45/70 and H4198 is like a duck and a pond.
