I have an M&P 22 compact that I like but I have three magazines now. I often carry it in a holster in the mountains and I have used a couple different holsters. My magazine release will be inadvertantly touched and the mag will release, thus dropping the mag on the ground. Ive lost two while rabbit hunting and yesterday I lost one on a horse ride. Is there a way to make the button much more stiff? If not I will just sell it to someone that just uses it at the range and doesn't carry it.

I carry mine in a simple Uncle Mike's, never had that problem, check your holster it could be the problem.

Magazine releases have a disconcertingly small interaction with magazines anyway, so a small out-of-tolerance in the holster, frame, button, or spring could cause this. To find it, you're going to need to get in there and figure out how it works.

Drag out your instruction manual and read the directions for swapping the release to the other hand. Now do so; if the release works noticably better swapped, you're getting close. Look for what's different (holster, frame, button, or spring) between the two sides.

For instance, the mag will leave a small witness mark on the metal release shelf indicating how much overlap there is. If there noticably more overlap in a lefty setup than righty, you have a frame or button problem.
