I've seen a few M1 Carbines with a metal handguard instead of the standard wood. Were these confined to certain manufacturers or periods of production? Or are they later modifications or even reproduction pieces?

Good question. I will be watching this post. I have one with a metal handguard and three more with wooden handguards.

They are non-military add-ons or came on civilian M-1 carbine clones.

Exactly right. No US carbine had them.

Is one ever going to get one's hands on enough carbine ammo to NEED a perforated handguard?

Couldn't find one with it installed but this is what it looks like.

It goes where the upper part of the forestock should be.
