Just bought a new M1 carbine by AO. Having trouble with the magazine. To me it fits real loose. Lots of wobble front to back. Is this normal. I have tried other new magazines and they all wiggle. Any thoughts?

Unless ou have FTF probems dont worry much about it, try out some other mag too. I made a spacer out of cardboard to tightrn up the fit between the stock and the action works wonders.

I am having many failure to load. The first few will load then I will get a jam. It seems like the magazine needs to be slightly higher to feed correctly. Tried different factory ammo with no success. Hate to send a new gun back to the factory.

Don't. Just send the mag catch back, and have them send you one that is "beefier" at the contact points so that it will hold the mag higher. A gunsmith/welder might be able to modify a surplus catch to fit tighter, adding some metal to the section that engages the mag and filing to fit.

At least it is better than trying to get a warranty repair on a GI gun!
If it was a GI gun, I'd wonder if the mag catch were worn out. Does this one do it with all magazines, and what magazines are you using?

I only have 3 mag right now. One is from AO and the other two are made by KeepShooting. The keepshooting mags seem to be better quality. None of them will work. So disappointing.

I bought an AO carbine back in November and I had feeding issues with it at first too. As the rifle loosend up after a couple hundred rounds the ftf's became less common, but I still had an unacceptable amount jams until I bought some aftermarket magazines. I found some 30 round magazines at a gunshow for $25, I have know idea who makes them but I haven't had any ftf's with them yet. I wish I knew who makes them so I can get more. I also bought some of the Korean 15rd magazines which I've heard are pretty good, but I havn't tried them yet since the 30's work so good and I like that the bolt stays open after the last shot with the 30 rounders.

Have you tried resting the gun on the mag when you shoot? General speaking the mags should lock up tight. Mine don't wiggle and rattle.

I honestly didn't pay attention with the ao mag but I did notice the 30 rounders fit snug enough to scratch the side of the mags..

Unfortunately, I live in the great state of Massachusetts were I need to have a pre-ban high cap mag or a ten rounder. No one will ship a mag with more than ten round to an address in Massachusetts. There are a few placing in MA that I should be able to find a WWII or Vietnam era 15 or 30 round mag which would be compliant. I will try to replace the magazine catch with a beefier one like SharpDressedMan suggested. Thanks everyone for the information.

If you are using the high cap mag you will need the M2 style mag catch. It has a short leg on one side that catches a dimpled out notch on the side of the mag. They did that for reliable feeding in the M2.

Could you try putting a wrap of electrical tape around the top of the mag? I had to do that with my Sig522. Seems they molded the mag opening a hair generous and the mags would rock back and forth. Once I put about two wraps of tape around them the fit perfectly.

Skip the mixing and matching of parts. Call AO and get the rifle sent back to them for repair. There is obviously something out of Spec. either the mag. catch or possibly the trigger housing itself. Save yourself a whole lot of headaches and send it back to AO for repair. I highly doubt it will cost you anything other than shipping to them, as this sounds pretty obviously like a warranty issue.

+1 to what SilentScream said. The AO rifles have the new style mag catch for the 30 round mags. It should lock up tight.

Soloban,
Just for the hell of it I tried the electrical tape and it worked. All of the magazines fit nice and snug with no play. I will try firing later today. It does seem crazy that I have to do this for a new gun. I will be calling AO on Monday. Thanks again.

The electrical tape did not work when firing. Most failed to load into battery. Very frustrating.

For arguments sake, it sounds as if the trigger housing is out of spec. as such it's not presenting the magazine in the correct location to feed rounds from the mag into the chamber. BUT as I stated earlier, call AO and send it back in to have them inspect/repair the weapon.
