M1 Garand problem

I have a friend that is having a problem with cases splitting at the mouth of ammunition that he buys from The Civilian Marsmanship Program. Any thoughts on this? He is using their 180 grain ammunition and has been told to change to 150 grain ammunition...

Does CMP sell reloads or surplus ammunition?

I think all the CMP has sold in the last 2-3 years or more has been Greek M2 Ball 150 grain surplus stuff.

Maybe it's just bad brass, or old brass.

Anywho, I would think it would be either 150 grain M2 Ball, or 172 grain M1 Ball, not 180 grain if it was really military surplus M-1 Garand ammo.

The DCM/CMP has never ever sold reloads as far as I know.

CMP has been selling 150 grain Greek M2 ball, and lately some LC69 M2 ball. Neither of these is 180 grain. I do not believe CMP has ever sold 180gr .30-'06. Ten years ago I got a small quantity of National Match .30-'06 which has 172gr FMJBT bullets.

I have shot zillions of rounds of CMP ammo, and I can count the number of split necks on one hand.

CMP has never sold reloads. They have sold new Federal .30-'06 ammo with 150gr FMJ bullets in the past, but that's 4 years ago, or more.

Measure the neck of a few fired cases with a micrometer for an average, cases that have not split. If the fired diameter is a lot over .340" +.003" Maybe the chamber neck area is worn out. With that ammo, i dont think i would worry about it, just trash the split ones.

The CMP has never sold 180gr ammo. Nor the DCM for that matter.
