M1 pistol: anyone have experience?

Seems to me like a really useful pistol for some limited scenarios. Maybe a car gun - for backup in the event of a really, really bad day. Far-fetched, but bad things do happen.

It's kinda like a 30 round 357 magnum unless you tell me the shorter bbl really saps its power.

Anyway, anyone with experience with these?

Those were marketed as an "Enforcer" pistol. They were made by Universal and Iver Johnson, based on the M1 carbine. Parts interchangeability is not guaranteed with USGI.

I have heard of one FBI agent that kept one in his trunk in the 80's. As for actual utility? You'd have to ask someone that's owned one.

If you fired that thing without hearing protection, you'd be deaf forever! That's just plumb scary-looking, and I love M1 Carbines.

I had one years back. I should have never gotten rid of it.

I converted it to M2 (select fire, full auto) but it would never empty a 30 round mag without jamming.
It was impressive while it was working though.

My best friend's mom was a GBI agent and she carried one in the trunk of her car.

Hers also had the rock 'n roll switch.

I had one but eventually traded it for a Ruger Blackhawk chambered in 30 Calibre Carbine. It was OK, worked well and fun to shoot but it was mostly a novelty gun to me. The Blackhawk was a good trade since I was a far better shot with it and had a couple thousand cases in need of loading. Muzzle blast is impressive in both guns for both the shooter and anybody else standing nearby.

A .30 caliber M1 Carbine converted to a handgun. I don't trust the hitting power of a little 110gr .30-caliber bullet, even at 1500 FPS. It may work, but there are far more portable handguns in far superior calibers available from Glock. I'd recommend the Glock 20 in 10mm Auto. You'll have 16 or 17 rounds of 10mm ammunition, plus 16 more in a spare magazine. This beats the 7.62mm carbine ammo by a long shot, and it is in a far handier firearm. The G20 is concealable also.

Looks like a fun little gun. Hang it on a single point sling for PDW duty, or SBR it and drop it into a repop M1A1 stock.

Then I'd consider the .40 S&W Glock 22. A mere 34 ounces loaded and 16 rounds of hard-hitting .40 rounds. And very concealable.

Your vehicle is better used to hightail it to safety, rather than a rolling fortress to be blasting full 30 rd mags out of.

I say, get the Enforcer. They're fun.
Current pricing being what it is, you can probably get an AK pistol cheaper.
The AK pistols are fun, but useless as udders on a bull, unless you're going to register it as a short barreled rifle. I hear the paperwork takes 6 months or more, currently.
