I am holding about 12 rifles for a friend of mine who is in the process of moving. One of his rifles is a mint M1A1 with a black fiberglass stock. He also has a Springfield scope that has never been mounted on it. He told me it is made for the M1A1. It looks like it is the Springfield Government 6x40 Standard Reticle, Rangefinding Reticle. The rifle is about 3 years old and has probably only had about 100 rounds through it. It has been pampered like you would not believe. He is asking $1200 for it. Do you think that is too much? It's a pretty darn sweet rifle, but I don't want to pay too much.

IF the $1200 includes the scope & rings/mount, that's a good price. It's not a great deal, but it's a fair one.

I think the original poster meant "M1A"

As in Springfield, Inc's copy of the "U.S. Rifle, Caliber 7.62 mm, M14".

Here's an M1A:

The M1A1 is better known as the M1 Carbine with side-folding paratrooper stock:

M1A1 was also the service designation of the Thompson Submachine gun.

Sorry about that. Yes, I meant M1A. My bad. From what I read, the scope is okay, certainly not as good as my Bushnell Elite that is on my Bushmaster. I don't know about $1200, I have been eying a JLD Enterprise Ptr91a2 for a few weeks. It looks like a fun semi-auto to shoot, and the price is pretty good. A private sale is always better and easier though. Too many decisions I guess.

If it has a match grade barrel & trigger it is a real good deal. For that set up I gave 1500 about 3 yrs ago & had to look for a WHILE before I found one. Any 20rd mags w/ it are a bonus.

I will have to ask my friend if it has the match grade barrel and trigger because he has the original paperwork.

If it was in my vault (or state) and he was asking 1200 for rifle and scope, I would fall over myself to give him the cash.

A Standard M1a has a value of 1200 alone, easily. The scope in not that big of a deal, but you can sell them for better than $250. So that would make the rifle cost less than 1000, if you get both for 1200, and that is a smokin deal. The M1a is a very fine 308 semi auto, Main Battle Rifle. If it has a Match barrel, it may have difficulty running Military Surplus ammo, so you may want to keep that in mind. If you get it and decide you don't like it, for 1200 (rifle and scope) you can easily get you cash out of it in a sale, even at 1200 for just the rifle, you would not lose and cash if you didn't fire sale it.

Disclaimer: I had to check what state you lived in before I wrote the above, otherwise it would have been a bad deal and I would have asked for a Phone number for your buddy.

Good luck.

He told me that it does not have a match barrel. I am probably going to go out today and shoot some rounds through it to see how I like it. I am not too concerned about the scope as I have a $300 Nikon 9x40 sitting in my basement anyways.

I am buying it for $1,100. The scope has never been used or mounted. It also comes with 2 magazines. Time to get some .308 reloading dies!!:D

You just got a great deal, depending on when the rifle was made. The older, the better. Use your serial number to find out when it was made and let us know.

Dave

That was a good buy! You can sell the scope on eBay and make it an even better deal. You didn't mention a mount, but if it came with a Springfield Armory, Inc. mount, sell that too and get a good one. A.R.M.S., Smith Ent., and Sadlak currently make the good ones.
