Last month I met a guy at the range where I’m a member. One thing led to another and he mentioned he had a 4” model 66 that he wanted to off load. Apparently he likes Snubbies and long barreled revolvers. Not shiny 4” revolvers.
At the time I couldn’t afford the gun but we ended up doing some trade wheeling and dealing.
I traded a Winchester 94 30-30 Carbine and a pistol gripped Mossberg 500 12ga.

I am definitely happy with that trade.

I am looking forward to my first range trip with it. Hopefully next week. My range is outdoors. Might be a bit chilly. ☃️😎

Nice! Except for the grips, it looks like my 66-2 I bought new way back in the early 80s (still have it too) Great all around fun gun, camp/hiking/hunting back up. Enjoy!
I didn’t think I would like the grips, but they fit my hands really well. I’ll have to shoot it and see how they feel then.
I prefer Altamont Ropers, but if I like them I will keep them. They look like Hogue’s.

You will probably like them ... I have a similar set on a model 58 S&W and a model 64 S&W and just love the heck out of the way they tame recoil and let you shoot small groups !

Shiny!

It's an interesting pre-lock transitional model with some features of the newer guns such as the release and MIM trigger. Can't tell if it has the hammer-mounted firing pin?
Keep in mind that gun was made before they addressed the forcing cone weak spot, so light bullet Magnum loads are generally considered best avoided.

Nice pickup Pat. Post some targets when you get 'em. 😊

The -5 is my favorite variant. As mentioned, Pre-lock, but with new-style release and MIM trigger - and frame-mounted firing pin. Pinned front sight, too. They tune nicely and easily, and there are some really nice aftermarket parts for them as well.

I thought the trigger and hammer looked a bit bland but not stainless or case hardened. I actually didn’t know the dash number on this 66 until I actually had it in my hands. I really wasn’t concerned about it. I was more interested in the barrel / cylinder gap, end shake, the flat spot on the breech end of the barrel, the lock up - it’s tight!…and the finish of that stainless steel.

Similar to Hogues, but I don't think they are Hogues. The Hogue grips are one piece and are secured with a screw from the bottom of the grip.
For shooting, I prefer Pachmayr Presentation rubber grips.
My 4” Model 66-2 wears those. They aren’t my favorites, but I left them on for the retro look. :D

The gun shooting a mid-range load, 6.5 gr Unique under a 158 gr SWC.
