A father has been arrested, strip-searched and hauled in for questioning – all because his four-year-old daughter drew a picture of a gun at school.

“I’m picking up my kids and then, next thing you know, I’m locked up,” Jessie Sansone, 26, told the Waterloo Region Record in Canada. “I was in shock. This is completely insane. My daughter drew a gun on a piece of paper at school.”

A Kitchener resident, had arrived at Forest Hill public school to pick up his children when he was called to the principal’s office. Three police officers informed him he was being charged with possession of a firearm. Then he was escorted out of the school, handcuffed and locked in the back of a police car.

According to Sansone, he didn’t learn what had caused the investigation until hours after his arrest. Other officers arrived at his home, where they instructed his wife to come to the police station and took his other three children to Family and Children’s Services to be questioned.

“Nobody was given any explanation,” Sansone’s wife, Stephanie Squires, told the paper. “I didn’t know why he was being arrested. He had absolutely no idea what this was even about. I just kept telling them. ‘You’re making a mistake.’”

Sansone was forced to undergo a full strip search.

The school principal, police and child welfare officials said there would need to be an investigation to determine whether he had a gun in his home that children could find.

Alison Scott, executive director of Family and Children’s Services, told the Record, “From a public safety point of view, any child drawing a picture of guns and saying there’s guns in a home would warrant some further conversation with the parents and child.”

Waterloo Regional Police Inspector Kevin Thaler said Forest Hill public school had complained that “a firearm was in a residence and children had access to it. We had every concern, based on this information, that children were in danger.”

He told the paper the school officials’ concern wasn’t based merely on the girl’s picture. Neaveh, Sansone’s daughter, also purportedly made remarks about the drawing that troubled officials.

When a teacher asked Neaveh who the man in the picture was, she purportedly said, “That’s my daddy’s. He uses it to shoot bad guys and monsters.”

Sansone said several hours after his arrest a detective apologized and informed him that he would be released without charges.

“To be honest with you, I broke down,” Sansone told the Record. “My character got put down so much. I was actually really hurt, like it could happen that easy. How do you recognize a criminal from a father?”

After his release, authorities asked Sansone to sign a document allowing a search of his house. He said he signed it, even though he had the option to decline.

“I just think they blew it out of proportion,” his wife said. “It was for absolutely nothing. They searched our house upside down and found nothing. They had the assumption he owned a firearm.”

She added, “The way everything happened was completely unnecessary, especially since we know the school very well. I don’t understand how they came to that conclusion from a four-year-old’s drawing.”

Alison Scott, executive director of Family and Children’s Services, said the agency was required to investigate after the school reported the incident.

“Our community would have an expectation if comments are made about a gun in a house, we’d be obligated to investigate that to ensure everything is safe,” she said. “In the end, it may not be substantiated. There may be a reasonable explanation for why the child drew that gun. But we have to go on what gets presented to us.”

According to the report, she acknowledged, “I’m sure this was a very stressful thing for the family.”

As for the strip search, Thaler said the procedure was required “for officer safety, because it’s a firearms-related incident.”

He noted, “At the point in the investigation when it was determined it was not a real firearm, the individual was released unconditionally.”

The Washington Post said it best: "The concept of civil and constitutional rights does not apply to those who choose to own guns and other deadly weapons."

Nuff sed.

I see that this happened in Canada but for anyone who thinks it can't happen here in the states better think again. Our gov't is going the same way. Lawyer up and no you can't search my house, get a search warrant.
I wonder how the kids are after that?

As a police officer one day, I needed to make contact with a local frequent flier (I forget why, nothing major). As I approached the residence, a young boy, about 3 or 4 years old, met me as he was playing outside. I asked if dad was there, to which he confirmed and also told me that they were smoking [marijuana] (I forget the exact wording but it was distinctly MJ). Before making contact I called the county attorney and asked her advice if I should try for a search warrant. She told me the utterings of a 3 or 4 year old wouldn't hold up. Mind you that's small town Iowa, but at least someone had some sence in my case, even though there WAS criminal activity going on.

I hope he SUES their pants off! The school, and the department that was foolish enough to arrest him. Ridiculous!

as the father of a teacher that is extremely dedicated to her job, I find this statement both uninformed and offensive

:) If you haven't been offended yet, you haven't been here long enough. Relax, it's opinion....one that's based on truth. Education is cornered by libs, and conservatives are in the extreme minority.

I really can't wait until this happens to me. My kids read the Rifleman while on the potty. They both know not to ever touch a gun and to tell Mom and Dad. Our hopes are for both to enjoy shooting and having a gun for defense. I know I'll get a call from an overreacting school official one day, and my Wife made sure they have my number to contact.

Why be offended by the statement? Noting that a person has some particular political mindset makes no assertion, either positive or negative, about that person's level of dedication.

aaah yes, the highest and worst crime, violating the rules of political correctness. If the guy were given the death sentence the politically correct universe might experience a singularity event and vanish from the universe, that's how unstable it is.

Utterly despicable!!! I honestly feel ill.

I wonder if she had drawn a picture like this what they would have done? Give her a gold star for the day? Called her parents and tell them what a wonderful and sweet little girl they have?

This has got to be one of the Biggest mistake's I've ever heard of!Arresting the father because his 4yr. old daughter took or drew a picture of a gun to school! We use to take our's to woodshop!I agree they should sue the school to the fullest extent possible.Maybe even give her a state paid for college education so she can Inform the rest of Canada and the World about what just took place.

I really surprised they didn't say the picture was of a Glock! Seems every gun in the media is a Glock.

Was this guy not allowed to have a gun? I can see that they may have grounds to search if he was specifically restricted to own a firearm.

Its not. Unfortunately this is an accurate, but blunt statement. From what I've observed, the ratio of liberal to conservative teacher in MN is about 10/1.

This is speaking from the role of teacher candidate and from conversations with my brother who is also a teacher.

Sorry you're offended, Scuba Steve. But there are so many nutcases running our schools right now you can't expect people to ignore what is going on. This isn't an isolated case. When you put fruitcakes in charge of schools this is what you get. People have to become more involved. And we cannot allow school people OR law enforcement to use the excuse that "we had to do it" fly anymore. You act stupidly, you are unemployed. Its here in the US too. Too often.

Think about the liberal majority in the education machine. Next consider how many hours each day our children spend in class instruction, homework, and with liberal peers. Compare that with how much influence conservative parents exercise on their children. Who is winning the battle for the minds of the next generation?

so are you saying she is a Liberal in education?

just asking. If not, then there is no need to take offense.

I am offended by all specious statements. They just make things worse. The focus here should be on the injustice done to this poor canadian (and what, if anything, we can do about it), but instead, it's just another round of liberal bashing on a "non-political" forum. Sheesh.

Based on this drawing, the school could have easily jumped to the conclusion that the household was in possession of a... television? Or are guns banned from Canadian television, too?

That's about as conflicting a statement as I have seen in a while. The problem itself was caused by some liberal teachers seeing a child drawing a firearm. Well whoop the hell eee. Granted handguns are generally illegal in Canada but we see this problem in many states here as well. Some nosy teacher with a book from some non parent Doctor (Just love how the experts seem to rarely have kids of their own) that thinks he/she knows everything about how your home should be and sends DHS after some poor parent that has done nothing at all wrong. Had that happened to me you could bet every dollar you have, and ever will have, that I would be suing the living hell out of EVERYONE involved! Here in the states, that would be unlawful detainment, illegal search and seizure, unlawful detainment of my children and wife, and everything else a good lawyer could dream up! You would have to rename me Trump the second afterwards!

We need to get these creatures away from our children. Ever since they started teaching all this crap in schools our kids have become holy nightmares with no discipline or care for anything but themselves. It's getting so bad in school that children aren't even allowed to defend themselves from physical violence! If they fight back they get expelled! I've taught every one of my children how to fight from the time they could walk. And I have told more than one teacher that I teach my kids one simple rule, "never start a fight but you damn well better finish it"

So almherdfan and scuba steve, if you have kids in the teaching world, teach them to TEACH and leave the parenting to the PARENTS and us PARENTS will be happy!
