Hey there all,
Just wondering if anyone had done mag-na-port'in on an XD .45 . What do you guys think for a carry piece?

I've got one ported handgun in .45acp, a Witness. It's fine, but you don't want to shoot from the waist! A friend had a S&W Model 58, .41 Magnum, Magna-ported, and it was wickedly loud. You also didn't want to shoot that one from waist level, as in point shooting.

I haven't felt the need to reduce recoil in my XD .45acp, and I shoot it a lot. It's much more comfortable to shoot than either of my 1911's in the same caliber, though none of them are what I would call uncomfortable.

Hope this helps.

In a defensive situation, you may have to fire your gun from this or other positions close to your body, e.g., near your face when shooting through a car window at a carjacker. The muzzle blast exiting through the ports could injure or even (in that case) blind you. If you want to see an example of what blast can do, fire a revolver through a coat pocket. Besides the obvious hole where the bullet exited, there will be a rip or tear on either side of the cylinder gap.

The only hole(s) in a defensive handgun's barrel should be the one the bullet comes out of. ;)

.45s don't generate much gas to make the porting very effective. Even in my .44 magnum, I didn't see much difference after I had it ported.

As said, porting will just about blind you if you shoot in low-light.

For something other than a fighting handgun, there is no harm in porting or other modifications. If I were to "port" a handgun, it would likely be the Mag-Na-Port. I like the unobtrusive slots rather than woodpecker holes all the way down the barrel, which in turn requires much more slide modification. Also, the company does other gunsmithing work and is reputed to be top notch.

RH45, I can assure you that 44 magnum was putting out more flame out the end of the barrel that those porting slots or holes. Not sure what type of porting you had either . PUt a 44 magnum under your nose without porting and see what happens. Lots of fasle crqap about a properly ported gun, IMO. Course I have only shot them for 25 years and I stillhave my hearing, and sight.......
