Make an Offer at a Big Chain Store?

    At Academy or Gander Mountain or the like, can the guys behind the counter accept an offer lower than the sticker?

    I don't know about accpet offers but Gander price matches. BTW where are you by Texahoma?

    I only speak for Gander Mountain.

    We could make reasonable deals on used guns, depending on the available margin.

    You had to clear things with the Gun dept. manager, and likely the Manager-On-Duty.

    Having worked for Dick's, yeah I know, I can say no. We had no power to adjust prices. You can always try a manager but good luck with that.

    I just bought a S&W 325 NG at the Roanoke V.A. Gander and they dropped the price $90.00 off of sticker + gave me an extra $25.00 off because the moon clips were not in the box. But they were high on the price any way.

    I tried it at Cabala's a couple of years ago.

    They had a S&W 629PD that had been in & out of the show case, getting glass shelf dings so many times the finish looked like an old hail damaged Chevy!

    I thought if they would knock off a couple hundred or even $150 I could send it back to S&W for a factory refinish and still come out on the deal.

    They would not budge from the MSRP, and still had it the last time I was there.

    ...However, Cabela's bargain cave can negotiate on scopes. It depends on how long the scope has been there, and they have a limit on how low they can go.

    I have tried at Academy a few times and didnt get anywhere. Not to say its not worth asking though. But, that Gander Mountain in Sherman which may be the one you go to has come down on a rifle my Dad bought when we were passing through. I think they ate the tax on it. Better than nothing.

    My philosophy was simple. I would leave a gun on a shelf at the price I thought I could get. After 6 months (give or take depending on the season) I would progressively mark it down until it sold. Why would a dealer want to sell a gun to you for less than the next guy that walks in the door. For me it was all about inventory management, and it was very successfull.

    Even though it is an accepted practice I always thought it was a bit rude for people to ask you ta lower the price. Would you walk into a grocery store and try to get a discount on a gallon of milk? If you don't like the price, shuffle on along if the dealers price is truly out of line the free market will eat him for lunch.

    Last time I asked the question of whether there was any room in the price, the guy behind the counter said, "Sure -- I can always take it up a couple of notches."

    Cabelas will negotiate on used gun prices.

    I worked at Dick's up until a few weeks ago. They would mark down a display gun that was all beat to hell if the customer asked.

    I didn't get to talk to a lot of customers though, I was told twice in the short time I worked there not to wait on customers, just keep putting stock up. They were way understaffed and not because they didn't have enough employees, they just wouldn't allow management the payroll $ to work the help that was available.

    I have had $70 and $150 knocked off the price on two rifles from Academy in Midland. I found some imperfections with the wood stocks and told them i would buy it if they lowered the price, both times they did. I don't buy anything from them anymore. The new guys they have working the counter could care less to do anything for you at any time of the day. I have been there from 9 in the morning to 6 in the evening and could not get any service at all. Hell i have been the only one at the damn counter for over 30 mins and couldn't get anyone to help me out. I don't bother with them anymore, i go to my favorite local shop any pay 250 or so more for the same rifle But i get great service and treated real well. I also don't have to wait around for another hour for them to call in the back ground check and then wait another 30 mins for the manager to carry the gun to the counter so i can pay for it, then he takes the gun out the front door and finally puts it into my HANDS! I will never buy another thing from them again.

    Sorry for turning this into more of a rant :) I just wanted to point out that i think the store in Midland Isn't worth ones time and effort to purchase a firearm from. I understand the prices are great, I would just rather support the mom and pop gun store then i would someone that could careless if i was in their store or not.

    People asking for a discount around the 12% on new high end merchandise are usually a sign of a good reasonable negotiator.

    If there is over 90 seconds of back and forth I throw my hand forward to shake and say "I am sorry I cannot do business with you today"

    Make your offer, try something like 10% down the sticker price, and most likely you will get it if the item needs to go.

    I sell expensive toys for a living.

    My experience has been that big box stores (Sportsman's Warehouse and Scheel's) will not come down on NIB guns, but will generally negotiate on used and may negotiate on display models if it has some damage.

    I negotiated 10% off a new Glock .40 at Academy because it was the last one they had in stock, was the display model, and appeared all scratched up.

    I got it home, the scratches were in the presevative grease coating the slide, and after some Break-Free it looked brand new :).

    Gander told me they would price match any regular gun store price an hour's drive from their store if that dealer had that item in stock for the price you quoted!

    I always ask for a 'deal'; if you don't ask, the answer's a de facto 'no'.

    To quote Errol Flynn, "If the lady says 'yes' only five percent of the time, it's worth asking the question".;)

    Contrary to recent Cabela's experiences I have had them lower prices of used guns before.

    I was once in a music store and a clerk asked, "Can I help you with anything?" I replied, "Yeah, you could knock a couple bucks off the price of this CD." She went in the back and came out with a coupon that did, indeed, knock a couple bucks off.

    So ask, if they can do it great, if not, keep looking.

    Don't understand why a retailer won't come down on the price? Other than greed. Flea markets always come down!!! i deserve it below cost.

    Academy wouldnt come down on the display 92 fs that had a few dings in it .
    Bass pro came down on a 391 that was dinged up ( the wood only) my buddy and I sanded it down and refinished it in one night .

    At Scheels, I asked for a discount, nothing wrong with the gun (New by the way) but just like someone said, if you don't ask....

    Anyways, the sales guy told me "it wouldn't be fair to others that paid the full price"

    I thought that was a pretty poor excuse, like said, if you don't ask....
