could the rpk be a good sharpshooting rifle?

how about buying a semi-auto rpk then adding a scope, sniper stock and removing the bipod?
(this would make it like the tabuk i guess.)

how much more accuracy and distance does the rpk 23inch barral have over the 16inch ak47 barral?

A lot of AKs come with side optics rails standard, including Saigas and (AFAIK) even the newer WASRs have 'em.

@ OP: Define sharpshooting. The AK isn't the most accurate design, RPKs (or whatever the civvie equivalent is) are heavy as hell, and with Romanian PSLs commonly available from about $600, why would you even bother?

the rpk is accurate because of its heavier receiver and longer barral.
removing the bipod for harmonics and installing a sniper stock and siderail scope would make the rpk look more like the tabuk.
the tabuk is based on the rpk.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabuk_Sniper_Rifle

i think making a tabuk style rifle would be a cool project.
it is a legitimate idea.

you can get a semi-auto rpk here at atlantic firearms.

define sharp shooting you ask.
precisely shooting targets at around 100 to 300 yards and supressing targets at about 300 to 800 yards.(like a designated marksman would).

Well, if you just want to do it for the sake of doing it, it's difficult to argue with your premise. Practical, cost-effective, resale value? Probably not.

You can get Saigas with 20-inch barrels in 7.62x39, I think. Much lighter, if that's a priority...

this project would be for the discriminating gun afishionado who wants a rifle that looks and acts like like the awsom and remarkable tabuk sniper rifle.

plus the heavier reseiver and longer barral of the semi-auto rpk would be good for laying down a lot of firepower.

the tabuk is a cool and exotic rifle

am i the first one to think of this idea?

p.s.
i think all the modifications i mentioned are completely reversible , if you are worried about resale value.
the psl is 7.62x54r the tabuk is 7.62x39.

yes the VEPR is good.
VEPR is one of the best ak rifles ever.i would use the VEPR over moast other rifles.

i think the stoped making VEPR rifle? why???

I was really gung ho to build a Tabuk DMR a year ago, but never got to it. The base for making a Tabuk style clone is a stamped M70 Yugo kit with a much longer barrel, unique buttstock (with the cutout), Tabuk flash hider, Tabuk scope rail, and a slightly modified Yugo gas block and FSB. Copes used to sell the barrels but haven't had them for a while (and probably never will again). It may be difficult at this point to make a decent clone without the Copes barrels available.

If you really want to make one I suggest you head over to experts at AK Forum in the Iraq section, they have almost a whole section dedicated to Tabuks. There are a bunch of build threads over there where you will get any and all info you need for your build-

More info on the Tabuk, and if you scroll about halfway down, there are some project links. The only thing I don't like about making one out of an RPK, is the RPK's weird barrel.

the rpk is accurate because of its heavier receiver and longer barral.

The RPK isn't particularly accurate and heavier receivers and longer barrels don't equate to accuracy when other design and QC issues dominate.

The Tabuk isn't particularly accurate either. It is simply a different semi shooting the 7.62X39 out of a longer barrel.

Cool is ok, but don't mistake it for accuracy.
