making an evil sks after the ban

I would like an otherwise stock sks to have a collapsable stock and a flash hider.
My understanding is that now that the ban is gone, this would still be illeagal unless the gun was US manufactured.

If I can convert a Chinese with these two features, where's a good flash hider?

If I can't convert, does anyone know of reasonable evil rifles now offered post ban? I'd like to gamble some bucks and resell the evil stuff for a profit if and when the law changes. And if I get stuck with it oh well....

This link has US made parts. The SKS has a small foreign parts count when you remove the magazine. I think all you have to do is replace the stock, handguard, and gas piston. You should also replace the operating rod. You were already planning on replacing the stock, right? Just don't put foreign magazines back in and you're fine. See the list below:

Notice that the three parts not in bold do not apply. That leaves us with 17 parts. Of these, we must eliminate seven. So, we eliminate the buttstock, handguard, and magazine assembly and that's 6 parts if we assume the pistol grip was built into the stock... some disagree but it's absolute if you remove the whole assembly. The other two parts are the piston and operating rod. That leaves us with parts 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14.

So, now we have 9 parts. If you happen to have a Detatchable magazine version of the SKS, you must replace the magazine baseplate and follower for compliance with a foreign made mad body. You can get by with JUST the operating rod, stock and handguard if you'd like.

SKS6633 is an operating rod
SKS6635 is another operating rod (not sure the dif)
SKS6602 is a gas piston

All the above parts are made in the USA and when you combine these with a US magazine and US Stock set, you can rock and roll.

Saw the operating rod and gas piston. I was hoping someone in the US might manufacture a trigger or another one/two additional parts for a little additional safety with muzzle attachments and such. I suppose I should go ahead and pick those up sometime soon...

If I remember correctly, you should also hang on to the receipts for proof of the US manufacture of the parts. Seems I read somewhere that receipts are the only way to prove you are legitimate if the issue is ever in question.

Tapco has always been a top quality source for me. I've never had a problem with an order and their parts are always as stated, if not better.

While we are talking SKS...

I have a Russian (Tula 1952) SKS. Its current configuration is basically stock except for a cheap scope on top just for kicks. It came with the blade bayonet and the 10 round fixed mag, both of which are in place. Still dressed in factory furniture also.

I am thinking that I want to use detacheable mags. Can I do this? Do I use AK-47 mags? If I can, whats the procedure to convert it? Do I need to add any other "American" parts to ease the compliance issue?

Flip side is this: Keep it totally stock and put back on the original receiver cover. Buy a Yugo SKS and make it "dirty" What are my limitations this way?

Exactly. But I have a 29 round detachable mag that is fun to use. I'd hate to have to switch back to a 5 or 10 round fixed mag. I hate this. It's like saying you can own a fork but you can only have 3 tongs on it instead of 4. Try enjoying a salad with that! :/

Siminov.net is WRONG. Do the parts count yourself. I come up with 11. Maybe they weren't counting the Tappet which BATF counts as an operating rod.

I thought pretty much all SKS rifles WERE pre-ban. I imagine you are talking about import laws as for the U.S. parts, but as far as the expiration of the ban, I thought if a weapon was built before the ban the ban did not apply to it. So I would think the configuration your talking about was never illegal in the first place and most surely wouldn't be illegal now, right?

Which ban? There were two which apply to imported guns. 922r still applies to imported SKS rifles. Before you put a folding stock on an SKS, it must have a US handguard, a US magazine, and one other US made part from the list above. Once you get the imported parts count down below 11, you can make it anything you want within the standard rules of 16" barrel and 26" overall. Good luck.

Just a handguard, magazine and one other part? I have more than that on mine now but I still think it has at least 11 foreign parts. I've got to finish my list of parts to make sure because most of my rifle was completely original (all matching numbers except the bolt) including the bayonet. I've since added a new US made handguard, gas tube, firing pin, trigger assembly, magazine, receiver cover with scope mount, and recoil compensator. But I think there might still be a number of original parts on it.

This is getting complicated.

A tappet is just what it is. The part is located in the rear sight housing and retained by the gas tube retaining lever. The piston strikes the tappet which, in turn, strikes the bolt carrier. This tappet is defined by the BATFE as an "Operating Rod." Therefore, you must pay the $3-8 bucks it costs to replace this part with a US made part. In your defense, it's been most often called a 'piston extension' but that name doesn't really define its function to me, so I call it a tappet.

I emailed Cabela's and the 10 round detachable mags they have ARE made in the US so that is certainly a benefit. I'm going to order a few of them.
