Yep. I shoot at Alpine when there is absolutely nothing else open.

They don't allow FMJ and frankly the safety of the range is questionable. There is not normally any kind of range officer, which is OK, but some of the patrons scare the hell out of me.

I'll go there and check the crowd sometimes. If it's empty I might use the range otherwise I usually just leave.

I like their sporting clays, reasonable price for that.

Unfortunately as far as public ranges go there isn't much choice in this area.

Winchester Gallery up in Lancaster is ok but it's indoor, not cheap, and the rifle range is too short.

There is a private range in Mansfield, the Arlington Sportsmans Club, but good luck finding any info about joining. It seems to be a very cryptic "who you know" process.

I joined a private range down in Johnson County. A little farther than I would like but the choices are slim around here.

(I'm at the edge of Ft Worth and Arlington/Mansfield/Kennedale)

Yeah... I've noticed that. Bugs me that they won't let me shoot FMJ's, though I did manage to get a good price on some JHP's and bought enough to last me a year, so I'm set.

My Dad and I heard there was a tactical range up in McKinney... Do you know anything about that? That's a long drive too, though. The best thing to do would be to get some land and set up your own.

There is a sporting clay club near Waxahachie that is astronomical in price!! Wish there was a good place to shoot bp down this way! TexasRifleman what range do you shoot in Johnson Co? I had thought about going to the Garland Public Range. Anyone heard anything about them?

I used to shoot at Alpine, but I don't anymore for most of the reasons mentioned by TexasRifleman. A couple years ago I joined Parker County Sportsmans Club and now shoot at their range in far NW Parker County -- closer to my house anyway. Very nice range and great folks to be around.

I heard there was a new range opening in Rockwall TX just east of Garland.
I don't mean to hijack this thread at all but I am wondering if anyone here knows any info on it?

I have not been to Alpine in years. Last time the RO was a pain to everyone and some of the shooters there had very questionable safty issues. I think the guy doing the RO shift that day was not trained or a newbie shooter standing in for the full time RO.

I spend as much time keeping an eye on the other shooters barrels as I did shooting.

I heard on another forum that sunup to 11:00 or so at Alpine is good because "that's before the crazies show up", as he put it. May give it a try some day.

+1 for Arlington Sportsmen's Club. Excellent facility, excellent location, excellent value, excellent membership. Unless things have changed, expect to be on a waiting list to get in.

Alpine is a good range if you go on weekday mornings. You couldn't pay me to go there on a weekend!! Where is this private range in Johnson County??

I remember as a kid when dad would take us out to J&J in Grand Prairie (next to Yello-Belly Drag Strip). Alas, it is no more. At one time, we were members of DeSoto Gun Club (just north of Waxahachie, off of Sterret Road). It was more of a skeet/trap place, but used to have a small pistol/rifle area. The membership rates used to be very reasonable. I don't know the current rates.

Here is the link to their website. There is a pro-rated dues system that starts as $230+ a year. Looks like they are all trap and skeet now.

That's a shame that they no longer have the rifle/pistol range. As far as dues, $230/month isn't bad. At least, it's not bad compared to the dues I've heard about at Dallas Gun Club (in Lewisville).

Garland Public Shooting Range does not allow FMJ but they run a tight ship and are very nice people. Range Officers are on duty at all times.

Dallas Tx

hey fellas so i am loking for a good outdoor shooting range in the area i usally go to the dfw gun club great range but i want to shoot my rifle standing any help appreciated

I used to live in Haltom City and you guys make me feel sooo lucky I got out of the metroplex. I live in Paris, TX and I'm a member of an unsupervised outdoor pistol and rifle range and for a $50 yearly membership they give me the combination to the gate.
