Marietta GA PD issues G42

I thought this was interesting. I am a glock fan and believe in the reliability of the weapon. So I like that MPD selected the G42. However, I did not realize some PD's issue weapons for back-up or off-duty as the article states. I always thought they recieved a service weapon, and either carried that of duty or you provided your own back-up. Is this an uncommon occurrence ?

Not too surprising. Marietta is literally next door to Glock US corporate headquarters (Smyrna, GA). Only the town of Fair Oaks separate the two towns on South Cobb Drive.
They're NW Atlanta suburbs.

Well, I can imagine many having a hard time handling the G27, but regardless Glock was eventually gonna pay somebody enough to put this in a holster for this role.

For a "backup and off-duty weapon", it seems just fine. I'd be worried if they were issuing it as a primary but that's not the case.

It usually comes down to departmental policy.

If the department wants to dictate what you carry when you are off-duty, it makes it a lot easier if they just issue it to you...then you don't have an excuse to not conform

For an off duty and backup, it's a great idea. The g27 is like a brick compared to the g42. It's role is a hide out pistol, a last ditch effort and has to be hidden so well that a perp can't see it. G27 is a bit big for that and better suited for detective or plane clothes work as a main gun role. I did 30 years in LE world and yes some departments do issue backup guns. My department was one of them. Our backup guns were funded by the police association but belonged to the department. A one time purchase and the department picked up the tab for any future purchases. I see wide open eyes because they went from 40 to 380. I am so tired of seeing statements like, " if it doesn't begin with a 4 it's useless". It's not caliber people, it's where you put your rounds that count. Bigger calibers have more power, so that in the LE world you can punch through objects as in, cars, walls, windshield glass and so on. The G42 is for a backup pistol plenty capable of inflicting a stopping wound. You want to win in a bad situation, stop thinking hardware and start thinking tactically.

Trading in a bunch of 16 year old guns that are really too big for CC for brand new guns far more suitable for the job seems like a good trade. I'd bet they got a sweetheart deal too. This looks good for Glock to get the G42 out there in a big sale.

No wonder they're not shipping blue label ones to the stores. When my LGS placed a blue label order, they were told there were 300 individual officer orders for the 42 before the stores would get them. I just hope I get mine before my GSSF certificates expire in May 2015!

For a backup gun it's fine, for a primary carry off duty weapon I would be more comfortable with the g-27. In 380 your limited to fmj if you want adequate penetration.

Is it a must do, or can they still chose a different gun if they want to pay for it? I can't see them limiting their guys to a 380 only for off duty.Has any Department put the PPQ on it's duty list yet?
