Marlin 336A

So I just picked up a Marlin 336A 30-30 in a trade the other day, haven't had time to shoot it yet but it seems like a fun little gun. Since I got it in a trade I have no idea what its worth, I'm thinking around $400-450, plus its got some peep sights on it supposedly worth about $100. Anyway I decided to ask the experts here what you guys think it would be worth. According to the serial number its an '05, overall pretty good condition. No rust, few nicks on the stock by sling swivel (see pics) any info would be appreciated as I'm hoping to sell it soon to fund some other projects.

A little history. The original 336A's were a 24" barreled rifle with a 1/2 length mag tube. They had an endcap at the end of the forend instead of a barrel band. The 336C was the 20" carbine with 2 barrel bands. Both with walnut stocks. They stopped making the original 336A quite a while back. I don't recall seeing one in a Marlin catalog since the 1970's

At some point Marlin started making a budget version with cheaper wood called the 336W. These were typically sold at Walmart or other big box stores. For some reason that I cannot explain they brought back a modified version of the original 336A. It is identical to the budget 336W, except for the endcap like yours has instead of a 2nd barrel band. They did away with the longer barrel and 1/2 length mag tube.

I'm sure the rifle will function just fine and be just as accurate as one of the more expensive versions. But the cheaper wood should bring the price down to around $300 or so. A 336C with walnut might well bring $400. The sights might help some with value, but generally add well less than 1/2 what they cost new to a guns value.

I say it should sell for less. Too many buyers simply either don't care or can't seem to tell the difference between walnut and cheap wood. I've seen some of these budget guns sell while a much nicer gun sat on the rack at the same price.

 

It's a late 336A with stained birch furniture. It's prolly worth closer to $299.99, but that's no biggie. It's still a pre-Remington Marlin. The peep is just gonna sweeten the pot a little for someone who prefers open sights.

 

around here id say that gun would bring about 350 to 400 buks.low end if the buyer didnt want the peep. if he dont, pull it and sell on ebay. it would prob bring 30 to 50 buks.

I shoot a 30-30 during deer season pretty often. It's been several years since I used a high powered rifle like 308 through 7 Rem Mag for deer. Keep you shots under 175 or so and place it right and you'll do fine. I love a 150 gr corelokt or the 165 gr lever evolutions. I use 2-7X32mm scopes mounted as low as possible and those 125-150 yard shots are a cinch.

 

In some areas they are worth a lot more than outhers.

 

That is true, but the same rifle sells for $375 new anywhere in the country. While you might get someone to pay $400 for a used budget gun they would be foolish to do so. Around $300 is on the high side for this gun used. In many places $200 would be the going rate.

Around these parts they appear to be going around $400ish. I put it in the paper for about that and we'll see what happens. Decided I got plenty of other guns I can hunt deer with lol
