Marlin 981T Trigger adjustment

I have seen just a few people post on here about adjusting the Marlin .22lr bolt action rifle's t-900 trigger system and even fewer about the model 981T. Those that have had suggestions all say to buy the Rifle basics trigger. They have also noted that for the model 981T the safety won't work correctly after installation of a new RB trigger and that further adjustment is required.

Today I took the trigger system apart on my 981T and was able to make some adjustments without purchasing a new trigger. But I was a dunce and didn't measure the trigger pull before the adjustment. However I can say that there was a appreciable difference. And i was able to cut my shot group down quite a bit (best i can do with old production Remy gold). No safety adjustments were needed and it didn't cost me anything.

I will measure the trigger pull tomorrow and post it.

I would like anyone out there who has modified their Marlin T900 trigger system on their 981T (aftermarket or not) to comment on this.

I didn't know that something was wrong with the trigger on mine? I am completely satisfied with the groups I shoot with it - as is.

OK so i measured the trigger pull today without further adjustments it is at 4.04 lbs. All i have done so far is smoothed the edge where the trigger meets the sear. This happens to be one of the recommendations from rimfirecentral.com (thank you Bailey Boat) there were some other good ones i will also try. I will do a step by step at each stage and report the trigger pull to see what makes the best improvement.

The biggest change will come from the spring swap, particularly the trigger return spring. I think the coil springs on a Chevy are lighter than the Marlin!!!! Seriously, buy a Mini Bic and use the spring that returns the "pad" on the lighter and you'll be amazed at the difference!!!!! PM me if you have any issues on making the change....

I have replaced the trigger return spring and I am down to 2.35 lbs on the trigger pull. that is a big change! I think i will leave it there. I don't have a need to go lighter than that.

I hated my T900 trigger. I did all the home mods and spring swaps. It got better but it didn't remove the creep and was still a bit heavy, at least for the bench work I wanted to try with it. The rifle basix trigger was a night and day change. I thought the T900 was ok when I had it on the rifle but once the rifle basix hit I tossed the T900 back in the parts bin.

Just a word of caution when working on triggers. I know nothing of the marlin's trigger. I am a hunter and care not for light triggers. I once adjusted a trigger on a 600 remington and messed it up as the fp would drop when the bolt was closed.

I did the pen spring trigger mod to my Marlin 981T with a T-900 trigger.

It took about 10 minutes.











1.Remove the bottom C-clip allowing the bottom pin to be removed. Remove trigger.

2. Remove spring & replace with new spring. (mine was a pen spring snipped in half)

3. Reassemble in reverse order.

4.Test fire.

I found a Dental pick extremely helpful in removing the C-clip.

My trigger is much lighter & breaks crisply now.
