I have the same rifle, it is wicked fun to shoot. What ammo do you use? I'd love to hear how that scope works out for you.

I like the lever evolutions. You can go from mild to wild with that 45-70. Just keep the scope out of your eye with the hot loads.

Got one just like it with a Leopold 2.5 X fixed power scope. I took the irons off mine because with the low power scope they were somewhat of a distraction. I shoot Garrett 420 grain Hammerheads and it makes for a pretty potent setup on both ends even with the ported barrel. The idea was to use it to hunt elk in heavy timber at short range. Unfortunatly all I have manage to take with it so far is one Mule deer. This is more a function of the area I used to hunt however which was much better suited to my 30/378 WBY Mag.

I was gonna say.
If your Leupold VX-1 1-4x20mm has any eye relief left, slide it foreward in the rings and use it all. Looks to me like it could go further foreward.

I have almost the exact same setup with vx III 1.5x5, I like the cheap federal 300g HP's for messing around but for hunting I like the Bufflo Bore 405g hard cast and the 350g jacketed rounds, unless you have a kneck like Matt Hughes I would move your scope as far foward as comfortable. You porb won't have a issue with off the shelf rounds but the garret and BB rounds will get your attention.

I have the GG too with the XS ghost rings. Been out with handloads so far and got 1" groups at 50yds. This was also my first time with the sights. Load I am using is 405gr Rremington JSP.

Mine is a non-ported 1895G with a Weaver V3 1-3x20mm, two piece weaver bases and low rings.
The guys saying "mount it forward" have got it right, I think, you try a stiff load off the bench without putting a good grip on the forend and that thing will cut you another mouth on your eyebrow.
Only factory I ran through mine was the Rem 300g HP. Clocked 1580 fps in mine and gave ~2" @ 100 yards.
Handloads...I love loading for the thing. Jacketed I use H4198 or Rl-7 with the Hornady or Nosler (sadly discontinued) 300g to push right up on 2000 fps, the Hornady for deer, the Nosler for tougher game. Cast, I use 2400 and Unique to push a 350g cast bullet to 1400 and 1125 respectively. I also use Rl-7 to push the same cast bullet to 1770 for a nice thumper. All loads under 1.5" @ 100, from mild to...not mild.
It's a great rifle and cartridge combo.

I thank you all for worrying about my saftey, but i've got that scope as far forward as i can while still getting a clear sight picture.
I am a big guy (6'6" 285ilbs) and because of this, rifles seem to extend further out when i shoulder them than "normal" sized people.
All my guns that have scopes are mounted far back like this one, it looks wierd to some but it's what i have to do to get them to work for me without creeping the stock when i shoulder them.
Thanks for the info on the ammo though.

I have a Express Sight Systems Lever Scout Mount on my non-ported Guide Gun and just
replaced the Aimpoint Micro T-1 with a Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm IER Scout Scope in QRW rings.
I've also replaced the original iron sights with a DRC WINGED 1895 GHOST-RING SIGHT SET.
The rifle should return from Clements in about a month.

I'm like you a pretty big guy (6'5". 290 lbs)and the scope looks just about right. I probably push it forward with the power ring a little bit closer to the back ring. I have the same gun and switched from a Leupold 2x-7x to a set of WGRS peep sights. I lost a shot at a deer because of the scope and not being able to find the field of view quick enough.
