A friend of mine just inherited from his dad a Marlin Model 55 12 ga. He called me to say that he was having a problem finding the serial number.

I looked at it and couldn't find it either. I had it totally dismantled. There are no signs of filing at all and still no luck. Did Marlin produce a Model 55 without SNs? Or are we just blind?

The law didn't require serial numbers before the gun control act of 1968, so manufacturers would usually leave the numbers off of the low end guns.

Berek, My dad gave me mine for Christmas 1965, I was 12 years old and had it until a few years ago when I passed it to a son. Mine did not a SN either. While it may have been a low end gun it came with a gold palted trigger, recoil pad with a white spacer, muzzle break, and an adjustable "Micro-Choke" on a solid American Walnut stock. The guns are virtually indestructable and will last several lifetimes. I think the biggest problem was that the magazine spring sometimes give trouble but can be purchase yet for a nominal fee. Good upland hunting gun!! I love mine and my son would put up a fight over it. Dads gun. He will eventually get all of mine.

Whew... we were nervous for a minute. After reading the regs on firearms and not finding a SN, we thought he'd wind up in jail. Thanx fer the info, y'all.
