Hi guys, I just picked up one of these rifles last night for 100.:)

According to the Serial number, it is a 1980 production gun. No safety and no checkering. Gold trigger. Very good shape,

One peculiar thing is that there is a hole in the left side of the receiver up by the barrel that looks like it should have a screw in it but it is not shown in the manual I downloaded from Marlin.

The one circled is the one I'm talking about, the one below it isn't present on my rifle. The manual shows no screw for either hole and there is nothing coming from the other side either, that I can tell. I'm wondering if it was a plug for a hole used in manufacturing. Also, does anyone know where/if I can find a replacement? It's not threaded.

I've got a 1982 one that I bought NIB and it has the same hole. I understand it's there to release the pressure in the event of a ruptured case. I have no idea if that's true or not, but it seems I hear/read it somewhere. If you look you'll see that it is right where the bolt locks up to the chamber so it seems logical.

Nice rifle you got. Enjoy it. For $100.00 you basically stold it. :) I paid more than that for mine in 1982.
 
I just bought an '80 39A a month ago for 2.5x that price & was very happy with the buy. You got a heck of a deal!
CajunBass & AirForceShooter are correct on the purpose of the hole.
The lower hole on the newer ones is to check for a loaded magazine.
You see brass if loaded or the red tip of the follower if empty.
You're going to like that rifle!

Good nick name, because you need to get to confession over buying a 39A for $100. Seriously though, we're happy for you, but that was a steal and a half.

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought it might have belonged there as it was blued inside. I have just never seen an open hole in a receiver and wasn't sure if it was supposed to be there.

The gun was a steal but I don't feel bad because the guy got it in a trade for something and didn't know or care what it was worth. He gave it to his brother and said see if you can sell it for 100 and of course,;) he could.
