im trying to decide between a marlin .17HMR and Savage .17HMR and need to know from those who have used them. how accurate they are (i.e 200yrds) and which is best 4 me 2 buy. i will have no oppertunity to test them myself. until one is actually bought & delivered to me.

thanks adam

Adam,

I wanted a Savage, and was not able to get one. I bought a Marlin VS. I put a RifleBasix trigger in, and its the most accurate rimfire I've ever shot. I'll know more definitively how its accuracy is in a few weeks, when I get my shooting eye repaired surgically.
Right now, the fine crosshairs are near invisible to me. I think you'll be pleased with either, after some trigger work.
hope this helps,
Tom

how much 4 basic trigger unit or may i be just as well geting gunsmith taking some linkage out of trigger/

I have a Savage 17HMR and a Marlin 22Mag (same basic gun as the HMR)
They both shoot about the same, but the Marlin trigger is a breeze to work on and make correct. The Savage trigger is more complex and you need to buy the Rifle Basix trigger to get the quality of trigger you can make the Marlin trigger into yourself. I think you are fooling yourself to think you can shoot a 17HMR 200 yards. you can do it, but you ain't gonna do anything to it. Realisticly it's in the same legue with the 22 Mag, only it shoots more accuratly.

wanzwld: thanks 4 advice. but how do i set up a marlin trigger ?

also about the HMR range. im actually planning on using it to 250yrds on crows, rabbits etc and 150 on foxes, i know a guy who says his ruger does it which shows cartridge is capable. though i wonder if a marlin can do it?

how much more accuratly? i am wanting either the .22mag or the .17 but cannot decide:rolleyes:

nevermind, i guess i should've searched the forum before i asked the question. i have decided on the 22mag. now the prob is deciding on which rifle:rolleyes: i have a marlin m60 22lr that i absolutely love. i can shoot sweetgum balls off the tree at 50-60 yards. does anyone know if marlin makes a m60 in 22mag? if they dont then who makes a similar rifle that will not cost me an arm and a leg?

Savage. The Marlins have a sloppy magazine design. Also, the Marlin bolts are not nearly as smooth as the Savage. I'd get the savage 93FVSS (stainless, bull barrel) in .22mag for any small game application.
