Marylanders, another shoot?

A lot of the better shops around here are one or two man (sometimes woman) operations and I guess the guy wants a day off. The bigger shops for the most part aren't nearly as good. My three favorite shops are part-time or at least not 7 days a week. One is closed Sun and Mon, one changed its hours so I'm not 100% sure the hours but I think they are open Thurs, Fri evenings and Sat (used to be Fri through Sunday, but they added Thurs and dropped Sun), they also are sometimes closed on their posted hours, and the third is Shooter's Discount (they are either Wen through Sat or Wen through Sun).

Yipee! I think I made Lou's first sale of the day today when I........

....broke down and bought one of his Yugo SKS's.....

Was looking at the Mausers, but for $40 more I figured I'd buy a true piece of history.

I hope to have it at the MD shoot.....

Might still go back and get that 8mm though.....it's only $99

Anapex, I'll put it up here for everyone to see (since I'm not badmouthing anyone else, I've bought from others and some were good experiences, so I'm not worried about any lawsuits or anything). My three favorite are:

-Clay's Hunting and Fishing (or something like that, Clay's I know for sure) in Ellicott City. Really friendly guy. He actually stopped me to talk while I was walking by his table at the last gunshow (I was going to leave him alone because I figured he was pretty busy). Only used handguns but usually some nice ones, good rifle selection from mil-surplus to new manufacture, ok prices, and really good to deal with (and I think the prices are negotiable). He is the one that is open Thurs and Fri evenings and Sat (most of the time anyway).

-Shooter's Discount in Arbutus. Small but usually nice selection of used handguns, usually large selection of used and mil-surplus rifles. Good prices and a great guy to deal with (my only problem as I've said before is I'll sometimes stop in, sometimes just to look for a moment, and I leave 2 hours later because of the great conversation- Clay's is almost as "bad" on this). He is the one that is Wen through Sat (he may also be open Sun but I'm not sure about that).

-The GunRack in Burtonsville. Good selection of new and used handguns and rifles (they've been carrying CZ for years). Prices vary from slightly better than average to slightly higher but the service is incredible. They are pretty much full-service (I think the owner is a gunsmith but I haven't had the need to find out for sure). They are also usually willing to talk for a while and they are certainly willing to help out a new shooter. The only drawback on this count is if a cop comes in they drop everyone else for the more important police customer and that tendency (even when dealing with me who had bought 4 guns from them in a year and a half and referred my best friend to them who bought a nearly $1k gun from them) has dropped them from my favorite to my third favorite. They are the one closed Sun and Mon (they aren't a one man operation though, there is one full-time employee in addition to the owner and there is sometimes a part-timer).

I live far enough away from Atlantic Arms in Rockville that they aren't on my list (I don't have enough experience with them) but I can say that everytime I go in there I get service that is right up there with the better small shops (and they aren't that small). The prices seem to be from slightly better than average to slightly higher. I don't know if they negotiate. If they were a little closer so I got there more often they'd probably be on my list too. I'm pretty sure they are 7 days a week, but most days (with a few exceptions) they close pretty early.

Hey guys, this is a bump so that people will see this and hopefully go.

Also, well...

Go ahead, call me an idiot. I should have looked at the calender before setting the date. The 19th is Simchas Torah, a Jewish holiday that is really the end of another Jewish holiday (it is the end of a series of holidays that commemorate the giving of the Torah). Looks like I won't be at a shoot that was my idea . Hopefully some of the others who were interested can be there anyway. Sorry guys.

If you are curious as to Simchas Torah:

One last bump, while I won't be there I hope to hear that a bunch of you were. This shoot is this coming Sunday. Have fun guys.

Bump... and also a lament that I won't be able to make this one. Too much happening on the home front this weekend. Sorry to miss seeing you guys, and hope to make the next one. Keep 'em coming chaim!

Also a brief range report. Took my CMP Garand to the range at Elk Neck State Park last week (a buddy and I blew off work early and ran up the road). What a rush! First time I'd fired it... and I think I'm hooked on high power rifle. Couldn't believe how sweet the trigger was - dry firing is no substitute for the real thing. Got decent groups (for me) at 100 yards - I won't say how big - but it really was a hoot.

Now I need more Danish .30-06 and I'm shopping for a spotting scope. These old eyes did pretty good through the old iron battle sights, but seeing my groups was another matter entirely...

Which CMP Garand did you get? (Rack or Service) How long did yours take to get?

Jmurman:

Sorry, I ought to have been more specific. Mine is a "second generation" CMP Garand... I bought it from a guy who got it from the CMP - so I don't know the details.

It's an April 1944 Springfield... mismatched (so obviously rebuilt) but a great shooter.

Sorry I can't provide more info. Now that I've got "the fever" perhaps one of these days I'll qualify to buy my own.

Just a bump, How many people plan on going tomorrow? And how do you plan on identifying yourselves? ;)

Oh yeah this seems to be the address for the range. At least from the directions I've read it's position on the map seems right.

1400 Baltimore Blvd
Wesminster, MD 21157

Oh also if anyone in the Glen Burnie area wants to carpool I can drive.

Hey guys....I'm gonna have to skip this one as it turns out. I have a professional engagement today and have to get some more construction done on the house tomorrow. Shoot some for me....

Grr well we just had some friends pop in for a surprise visit so I'm gonna have to skip too, which really sucks because I've been wanting to get out to meet everyone (and shoot my Garand). I should be free tomorrow though (baring any surprise visits) to go over to On Target or such for an impromptu shoot.
