Mas 49/56 Help!!!

I finaly got my MAS 49/56 on sunday. All was fine untill I noticed that It is missing the gas cut-off mechanism and will not cycle!
Can I get this part? Is there a MAS 49 smith out there? Am I doomed?
 
If it was a Century Arms import just call Century and ask them to either send the replacement parts or issue a RMA# to return for warranty work. Century should work with you regardless of the dealer. If you aren't sure give them a call anyway and they can check to see if the weapon was imported by them instantly by using your serial#.

I've dealt with them over an SAR1 AK problem with very satisfactory results.

I finaly found a gunsmith who is an MAS 49/56 specialist I'll re-post the results when my rifle returns.
 
Is this mas a 7.5x54mm or the .308w conversion?

You can easily make you own gas adjuster if it a .308w conversion.

7.5 doesnt have or need a gas port adjustment. :)

the more I look at this rifle the more trouble it looks like. It is accualy missing the front and rear grenade sights and has a poor chamber. The guy I talked to said that he would install a expantion chamber behind the gas port, install an unmodified recoil spring, and recut the chamber and polish to nato(7.62X51) spec which should solve all the problems with the rifle. He also had some grenade sight he would install.
 
The front grenade sight is also the gas cutoff.

When it's in the up position, the gas system is blocked.
 
You should immediately purchase the current "Surplus Rifle" magazine published by Guns and Ammo as there is an entire article pertaining to your rifle. One of the highlights of the article is that you can restore functionality by polishing the chamber. All the pertinant details are outlined in the article.

Got it read it ,don't agree with the author that polishing the chamber will restore it to fuctionality,the smith he talked to first hit the nail on the head the additional pressure of the nato round and the shortening of the gas system causes a timing issue,lower gas pressure,slower ejection then it will fuction 100% even with a crummy chamber. In the article he mentions his friend has good luck with wolf brand steel case ammo because its "slick" more likely the steel cartriges do not expand as much as milsurp brass.I have heard of others making the gas system adj. not just pro smiths but garage ones as well,I would like to do the same.
 
Tell us how you made your own gas regulation system! Please?

I've tried and failed at this project, though I like the steel cased ammo idea.

My .308 Mas works for about 3-8 rounds, then the extractor rips the rim off. Takes a good pounding to extract the case...

Otherwise, I really like this rifle. Its fun to shoot and the price was right...

That's because the 7.62NATO is something like 12,000 PSI greater than the 7.5 French, and the geniuses at CAI didn't take that, among other things, into consideration when doing the covnersions. :scrutiny:

I have the info stored on disk, it has been a long while since I'd messed with the 49/56.

Im old now,memory isnt that great, but do think all needed is drilling a hole and install a SS screw.

If I run accrose this disk, I'll let you guys know.

Do recall this method worked very effectly.

Oh, the part I cant remember is if it is a solid screw or one the hollow inner with a hole on the side of it, this way you can adjust it for various ammo.

Im thinking it is a solid screw.

I'm aging too. And my sight is going. And my knees are creakin'. But the wife just gave me the come hither look. And I will, as soon as I'm done here:

What I did to try and make a gas regulator is thread one side of the existing bolt in the cut off. So I took off all the grenade stuff, pulled out the pin and threaded it. But there ain't much left to catch threads on, and doesn't have any kind of handle.

So I have a nut that I can tighten down when I find that perfect gas zone. I never found it before another case got stuck, so I gave up. I thought about using it as an anchor, or throwing it into the spokes of the bully's bicycle, but somehow it always ends up back in my safe...

I'd love a recipe to fix this once and for all, gas regulator and all.
