Massad "SIXGUNS AIN’T JUST FOR SENIORS"

I'm only 24 and, while I have an extensive collection of pistols, I shoot best with revolvers. I'm pretty accuracte and fast with autos, sure, but for the first six shots I am at my best with a medium frame .357.

Lucky

I am a huge 1911 fan, and I usually have one on my hip. That being said I also have a two three-inch SP-101s that I sometimes carry when the mood strikes me. I shoot the SP-101s as well as the 1911s, and the SP-101s are even easier to conceal as the grip is so small. Five shots of .38 or .357 before a reload are quite enough for me.

As for the Glock comment, I have not carried and will not carry a Glock. It is a personal decision based on concerns about snagging the cover garment on a gun with a six-pound trigger while holstering the weapon with one hand. I own Glocks and admire them for what they are, but I am not comfortable with one as my carry gun.

The funny thing to me is that the Glock safe action is somewhat reminiscent of using a revolver like the M640 Centennial in that the trigger pull is the same for all shots and only the trigger must be pulled in order for the gun to be fired. Yet some Glock shooters often disparage the revolver as outdated. I see the Glock safe action as a clever advancement of the DA revolver's consistency applied to the auto-loader. On the other hand, concealed carry of the Glock with the chamber loaded is not something that I find acceptable.

I want to make it clear that my prejudices against the Glock as a carry weapon for me are not meant to imply that I find fault with anyone who decides to carry a Glock. I just am not comfortable with the Glock as my carry weapon.

Everyone can wax nostalgic all they want in a thread like this, but when the poop hits the fan, everyone knows they are gonna want a Glock.

I Dont own a glock

Have CZ 75 and a Beretta 92.

Today i am carrying a 357 Ruger

Sorry, but no Glocks for me. It would take too much surgery on the glock's frame to make it work for me, and then, there would still be the neither-fish-nor-fowl mushy trigger. I did carry a G22 in my duty holster for a brief period, a bit over two years, as an interim duty pistol. I could never perform with that G22 to the level I could with a sixgun or a 1911. Once I discovered that a factory short trigger made a P229 fit my hand/fingers, the Glocks soon went away. (I am required to buy my own duty weapons, and after 2002 had to carry one of several specified .40 autos.)

Though I had long tended to carry my duty handgun on my own time, too, when I was carrying a G22 on duty, I toted SP101 snubbies on my own time. I could shoot the SP101s better than the G22!

In a real fight, the revolver is second to none up to the point it is out of ammo, and then, a second handgun on the belt beats any reload for speed. During a period of several years, several felons got to look up the barrel of a big stainless GP100 while my duty 1911, G22, or SIG P229 remained in the duty rig. Yes sir, a sixgun is perfectly suitable for starting a serious gunfight.

FWIW, I am not yet a half century old. I started "peace officering" near the end of the revolver's reign as the duty handgun, and had to carry a revolver during my first year of service, though I had actually started handgunning shortly before that time with a 1911. Though I initially looked upon sixguns as archaic, I knew I had to survive with sixguns, and made a point of learning DA sixgunning. I soon learned to love DA sixgunning, and have liked both revolvers and autos since then. Well, to be specific, certain autos and sixguns. I could live with either system, to the exclusion of the other, but why?

In 1982, Uncle Sam taught me how to shoot a handgun with 1911A1. As soon as I could buy myself a handgun, I bought a Colt Trooper Mk III. These days it's a S&W 64 instead. No Glock & no desire for one. 18 rounds of 158gr LSWCHP +P (with two speedloaders) will do for me.

My wife does own a Colt Targetsman FWIW.

When the poop hits the fan I'll be pulling my snub nosed .357 magnum revolver.

If it hits the fan for more than 5 shots I'll be pulling my other snub nosed .357 magnum revolver.

If I can't get the job done with those it'll be graduation day and I'm ready for that as well.:)

Pretty sure if I hit you with a 45 caliber 255gr JPH from a revolver first, the 17 shots in your Glock are irrelevant to the event at hand........... :)

I have "a" Glock ... and numerous Ruger and S&W revolvers. I like the Glock fine. But I like my wheelguns better.

No tupperware guns that go off when you sneeze and castorate plz. Ill stick with the steel wheelgun. Have long guns to, in case I need more. NO use for glocks at all.

Yep, I'll keep it. Getting approved as alternate off duty gun.

No g-rocks. I have to carry one for work, qualify expert or distinguished expert with one every year, but I don't like 'em.

I am 33 and think of my self as young, but am feeling old after 15 years of construction. With that said, my father raised me shooting S&W revolvers as he was a State policeman and was biased naturally cause that is what they carried. When I first started collecting seriously a couple of years ago, I started with semi-auto's but then moved to revolvers with in a year. I now own 4 revolvers out of 9 pistols, and my S&W 638 Bodyguard is my most comfortable pistol to CC. I feel like a true revolver guy at heart but see and use semi-auto's for CC when it feels appropriate. I love em all!!

Thanks for sharing the article.

I enjoyed reading it. Like him, I think it is great to see younger shooters with the revolver. It is hard to beat for hunting , home protection and concealed carry.

I'm 29 years old. First gun was a semi-auto Stoeger Cougar 9mm. Then I realized something: Revolvers are wicked cool. So I bought a S&W 627 PC. Revolvers are a lot of fun, very reliable, intrinsically more accurate, and the 357 is kills bad guys dead.

I agree. I love my revolvers, but when the streets are being overrun with terrorists, I'll be trusting my Glocks.

Our 'Only One" would have to be a .22rf.

If we were to allow the political climate to restrict to 'only one', I'd imagine powder and primers would be restricted also.

A K22 or a Ruger Super Single Six and a few bricks of CCI/Federal Std Velocity 40 grain solids seems to be a decent idea.

When it "hits the fan" the need for any handgun is pretty minimal. It would be more accurate to say everyone is going to want a rifle.

Self defense, for most of us, means less than 10 yards. We did an experiment once, where the an officer tried to un-snap and draw his pistol before his attacker (also one of us) rushed him from 15 yards or so with a knife. The guy with the knife was all over him several times in a row - - - he never got the pistol out in time. It was an eye opener.

My point is, as average citizens, in real life, there probably isn't going to be a 'gun fight' - - - maybe enough time for one or two shots - - - maybe. No reloads. The first one had better count, and it had better stop 'em in their tracks! I like a snubbie .38 + P Golden Sabre bullet in an up front strapless holster for those reasons. Glocks are OK, but I personally like Sig better - - - and you could probably get that first shot reliably. However, I'm almost certain I could get the second one as well - - - - out of my snubbie. And .38 + P Golden Sabres will flatten out like Portobella mushrooms and stay in the intended target.

I guess I do love wheel guns though; I have a copy of Elmer Keith's book Sixguns.
