Mauser K98 proper sight picture

This may sound stupid but I wanted to make sure I was using the correct sight picture when I shoot my Mauser. Do you fit the front sight into the notch and make the tip of the front sight and the rear even across the top?? I have heard the correct picture was making the front sight into a pyramid over the back sight notch?? Just don't want to waste ammo wether it's handloads or factory. Thanks guys

Well, it actually depends on how the rifle was sighted in by the last person who shot it, but AFAIK the standard is your first example: the front sight into the notch and make the tip of the front sight and the rear even across the top.

Now, whether you sight in to point of aim, where you center the top of the front post on the center of the target, or to 6 o'clock, where you set the target on the top of the front post, is entirely up to you.

That's why they make the sights adjustable!

So just set up a 50 yard target and shoot both ways I guess....right whitebear?

Make sure to keep your focus on the front sight, not on the target, and not on the rear sight. Don't shift your focus back and forth between the three either. As long as you keep your focus on the front sight and put the blur of the target on top of the front sight the same way every time, you'll shoot consistantly.

Mauser sights are difficult for some people to use because the front is an inverted V. The tip can get shiny or rounded off with wear and can be very hard to focus on. Make sure you blacken the sight by smoking it with a match or lighter before shooting.

Yep, set a target at a know distance and try both types of sight picture - a 3-5 shot group using each sight picture should tell you how the rifles sights are currently regulated, and let you see which one you prefer.

Also, +100 on what CB says - focus on the FRONT SIGHT! It may seem counterintuitive, but in my experience nothing helps a shooter's accuracy more.
