Is it safe to use 8x57 ammo in the 8x56R carbine?

Always shoot what the gun is chambered for.

Shooting the wrong caliber, especially through an old milsurp can be very dangerous and even if it doesn't cause damage to you then it could still damage your gun.

    The R means rimmed.

The 8x57 Mauser is a rimless cartridge.

But if you have a M-95 in 8x56R Mannlicher, it is probably not a Mauser 95.

    It should be a Steyr-Mannlicher M-95.

    Mauser 95's are usually 7x57.

BB you can get 8x56r at http://www.sportsmansguide.com/ they have the license to sell Hornady 8x56r...however heres the funny thing, Graf & Sons makes the reload parts (i.e. bullet, brass etc.) and supplies Sportsmans guide with the finished product.

    Go figure.

But its the only place i have been able to find ammo that isnt overpriced or has the Natzi stamping.
