Anyone had any experience with one of these? Got the security model with the 18.5" barrel on sale for $160 and it seems pretty solid. Started thinking about getting the 24" slug barrel but it costs almost as much as the entire shotgun. Thinking about getting another Maverick and having one for hunting and one for defense instead of having to mess with barrel swapping. One thing I can't figure out is if the barrel is rifled or not. Can't find on anyone's website if "rifle" barrel just means it's intended for slugs or actually rifled.

I have a slug Barrel for my Mossberg. And it is Rifled barrel and you can only use Sabot Slugs which are expensive. I prefer using standard Slugs with a bore barrel and use after market chokes. I also wanted a short Barrel shotgun for the type hunting I do. and wanted one that with the ability to use different chokes. I bought a Stoeger OV with a 20" barrel had it has proven to be a gun I love for any buckshot and has proven itself to be totally reliable with thousands of rounds down range. I might be selling my Mossberg as I have sold off a number of shotguns in the past few months. I also love single shot shotguns so that might be a alternative as well.
As for just standard Buckshot, many like the flight control. Again, I like standard Buck with a after market choke.

Agree with the smooth bore. I don't want a rifled barrel because of ammo cost.

There's a new Mossberg 500 12 gauge barrel on Gunbroker right now with a 24" cylinder bore barrel and rifle sights, with a Buy Now price of $141.21.

Just use a quality light and look down the barrel (unloaded, of course, please) and look for rifling. That will answer your question. As far as barrel swaps, they are remarkably fast on the 88, since they are built off the Mossberg 500. Prices for the barrels are about what they were pre Covid. It is going to boil down to how much space you have to store a spare barrel and how often will you use it? If you are only going to slug hunt once a year, it is probably a good investment just to get a separate barrel instead of another shotgun.

Also, rifled shotgun barrels are for shooting sabot slugs. You can use Foster style slugs in a smoothbore for hunting. They just won't have the range or accuracy of a sabot slug fired from a rifled barrel. I keep a couple of foster slugs on my HD shotgun for large animal control where I live.
