Maybe Wal-Mart should get out of the gun business

My wife had asked me to stop off at Wal-Mart on my way home from the range today to pick up a couple of things for her. While I was there I went over to check out their prices on ammo. While I was looking a customer came up and asked the clerk to see a rifle. When the clerk took the rifle out of the case not only did he not check to see if it was loaded, but he had it pointed at my head as he handed it to the customer. So I decided I could buy ammo elsewhere, took the rest of my items, checked out and left. I did see a manager and let him know they should train their employees on the basics of firearm safety.

So if they aren't going to train their people and just let anyone work around the guns maybe they should just get out of the gun business altogether. At least I had a great day at the range.

Most of the people working at Wal-Mart know butkiss about firearms & safety.
When I worked at a Wal-Mart in 2000 the guns were kept in a locked room in an area customers were not permitted in, and the display firearms were kept in locked cases.
A good amount of ammo was on shelves that, if the counter was left unattended, could be potentially raided by dishonest customers, and shotgun ammo was (and is still) out on display shelves.
So, it is theoretically possible you could somehow wind up with a loaded shotgun, and -- maybe -- a loaded rifle.
All the more reason for FIREARMS SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!!

A firearm safety course, graduation and continued training should be a requirement for any store selling guns. I wouldn't want to legislate the requirement. Each store should have the sense to put programs into place. The problem with Walmart is that they're so huge that it would take a multitude of customers to get pissed before Walmart made a change.

And at the same time the Wally-World in Ava has gun friendly clerks that seem to have some idea as to which end the bullet comes out. Of couse we are talking about an area where school lets out for opening day of deer season.

Ya im for more training. A lot of people rely on wally world. You take out all the guns and ammo and they loose their source for supplies

Walmart has a knack for putting the local little guys out of business. If Walmart stops selling firearms, the little guys will eventually be in business again right around the corner. In California, Walmart doesn't even sell firearms. (They do sell ammo, etc.) The small gun stores near the Walmarts are still in business.

Bushmaster, I live in small town Arkansas, trust me very gun friendly here. Just because it's gun friendly doesn't mean that everyone is educated about guns.

The way I see it is that without wal-mart, some people might not get in to shooting, and the more (legal) gun owners, the better.

I too live in a small town in Arkansas. And WalMart in all its wisdom took the guns out of our store. They still sell ammo, but not a very good selection. I wouldn't make too big of a deal out of it, or you will be shopping for guns and ammo elsewhere. A polite remark to watch the muzzle would have probably handled that situation, but remarks to the manager might get your store dry like ours. Sometimes you can educate a store worker by politely instructing him to keep the barrel pointed in a safe direction at all times. Mr T

what? get out of the gun business? i hope not; they're the only place that still sells affordable ammo and rifles. i'd love to shop at local gun shops, but when they're selling at twice the price of walmart, it's not a hard choice as to where i'm shopping. luckily, the walmart in my area has trained staff.
