Met a politician who actually shoots

We had a fund-raising shoot for our political action committee yesterday, and a candidate for attorney general stopped in to "press the flesh."

He borrowed somebody's Glock and went down to the range and did a pretty good job of clearing out the center of the target. This was his first time shooting a Glock; he's a revolver guy.

When I mentioned that we might have a full-auto fund-raising shoot next month, his eyes lit up. He's shot full-auto's with the ATF before (he's a US attorney) and loves it.

I suggested that he might get some negative press if the media finds out he was shooting machine guns. His response was that he is who he is, and he's not afraid to run away from that.

All in all, I was impressed.
 
I'm proud to say that Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee makes no secret of the fact that he has a CCW permit. I went to an NRA rally at the Holiday Inn in Springdale a couple years ago where Charlton Heston was speaking. When Gov. Mike's turn to speak came, he asked "How many of y'all are packing?" More than 50% of the people in that very packed (1000-1200 in attendance is my best guess) auditorium raised their hands. Gotta admire a politician who's willing to trust his constituents to carry while he's up on the stage. :D (I can only imagine that some of those East and West coast Senators would have fainted dead away if informed that the majority of their audience was armed)

Now he's pushing for a change in the law to make Arkansas' castle doctrine more like Florida's. Too bad he'll be term limited out next time around.
 
FireBreather01, yes, it was Van Hollen.

He told me that somewhere on his website is a photo of him with his left arm in a brace, and firing an M16 from his right hip. I haven't found the photo yet.

While I (and others) thought he did the, "hi, I'm JB Van Hollen and I'm running for office" bit a little too much, overall he came across very well.

There were people snapping photos of him shooting the Glock on the range, and he knew that.

If we do the subgun shoot next month, and he's there shooting rock n' roll with cameras clicking away, I'd say he's "a friend of ours."
