At the range playing with a new (to me) Norinco when a young man arrived to sight in his 30-06 for an upcoming hog hunt.
We chatted as he fussed with jamming rounds and it turns out he is a sniper returned from Iraq, who just re-upped for 6 more years.
He said he usually ran back and forth to inspect the target, from 100 yds.
I thanked him and told him welcome back.
Completely forgot to show him my AmericanSnipers.com wristband.

Met a sniper today

or a liar. It's a damn shame how many people are willing to lie about that sort of thing. I hope the young man you met was not.

Or a DM? I ran across a "sniper" last month and he turned into a DM.

No doubt still a good shot and he did dangerous duty in Iraq. However, be advised the gun culture is chock full of those who wish to embellish.:uhoh:

Now, let me tell you about me shooting last weekend . . .

I used to work with this Indian (as in Native American) said he was did some sniping during the Vietnam war. When asked about his confirmed kills he didn't want to go into details....

Always said "6 kills...3 men, 2 women, 1 kid"...always wondered if he was kidding or not.

be careful...

be careful there are a lot of liars out there. I have met 4 snipers. In reality, I think the number is 0. When I talked with them in more detail about shooting in general, they seem to be clueless. I usually gave them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they were only familiar with the military issue stuff. However, when I started talking about target shooting with 308 (7.62) and 300 win mag, then their stories start to fall apart. One guy showed me an AK-derivative, and asked me what kinds of "rounds" that gun shoots. He didn't even know where to look. One guy also claimed that his sniper rifle in the army shoots the same ammunition as the AK-47.

I had a good friend that did it in Vietnam and I've met a real deal one back from Iraq. I could care less if they capped anybody so I never ask.

The two I know/met are really cool nice dudes. Snipers are also some of the smartest guys you will find in the military.

The only thing worse than the guy who is a "CIA agent," "sniper" or "Navy SEAL" is the guy who is "best friends" with the first guy.

False Vets

Unless you are a Veteran It can be difficult to pick out False Vets. That being said sometimes the BS is sooo thick you might need to put on Hazmat gear to keep the stink off.
Most honest Vets in particular Snipers and Spec. Op's tend not to spill their job descriptions on first or second meetings. I knew one from my AA group for 5 years before he spoke with me about his duty assignments. Turns out he served with the original SEAL 6 team. Yes I have confirmation of the veracity of his claim. Another I knew for 6 or 8 Months before I found out he was an armourer for a Aircraft Carrier and its Spec Ops teams.
Most of the time when someone I never met wants to Volunteer info about their service they want to impress me and I am not. As a Vet (not an exemplary soldier to say the least) I find it sad that people need to embelish and or falsely represent the character of service of our best and bravest.
For the record..
I was a REMF and a Boozehound and rarely if ever want to make use of my Benefits so that others who served can use the system. I was honorable under medical due to my drinking, something that could not happen in todays Military. I am proud I was willing to serve, and proud I made the effort I did, but am not proud of the end result.
Veterans Rights and Benefits are important to me not for my benefits but as a sort of amends to those I served with since they put up with me as long as they did.

Their was a gentleman (mid 20's) at our range a couple years ago who was bragging about being a sniper. He asked to see my rifle, and when he looked through my scope he said "hey, what are all those dots"? My buddy started laughing so hard I thought he was going to wet himself. I explained to this guy they were called mill dots, and told him what they were for. He left rather abruptly after that, and my buddy was still howling himself silly.LOL

I make it my mission in life to trip up people that lie about military exploits or experience. I always ask them what unit they were in or what BUDs class weapons stuff they should know. If they are lying I call them on it loudly for everyone to hear.

Some idiot I met recently was bragging up being Delta, I asked him his MOS and what unit. He said it was so long ago he didn't remember. "So you're a liar then." was my reply. He changed the subject before walking off.

PX hero's and liars take credit away from the real people that do the dirty jobs. I've never met anybody that's been in the real **** and bragged about it.

I once met a man at the range that claimed to be a "Marine Sniper" and that he had just gotten out of "The Sandbox." I asked him what division he had served in, and he said "The 82 Airborne Division." I laughed so hard I thought my sides were going to split.

"...about his confirmed kills he didn't want to go into details..." Chances are he was/is legit. I've never once met any vet of any war who would talk about his time in combat. They want to forget what they saw. A real vet will tell you that the ones who talk the most, did the least.

The real deal, like has already been posted, doesn't talk freely. I know guys who served in tough places and they want to get it behind them, not relive it.

Met a guy once bragging about working for Blackwater during the Katrina/Rita era. We were at the range and he was wearing every piece of Blackwater logo clothing and gear he could afford. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me because he did not look like the poster boy for specwar...more like the before photo on a weight loss commercial. Way before.

He was standing around and loudly proclaiming what a stud he was for all the arrests and shootouts he was in while patrolling the ninth ward in NOLA. We all stood around and laughed in his face.

It may have been true. I heard that Blackwater was hiring anyone and everyone with a DD214 to go to NOLA at the time. Why they would have hired him, I don't know.

Didn't seem to be

bragging. Not being ex-service, I don't have the expertise to trip him up. But I'll ask around about him and report back.

Yep. We've got a "sniper" working the gun counter at the local Gander Mtn.

Who knows? Maybe he's legit. Maybe SIG is going to release their 10mm P220 any day now.

I met a "sniper" at a friends house while showing him my new Barrett M99. He was telling me about using one just like it when he was a sniper and how he killed 3 people in 1 shot. He said he shot the concrete wall, the bullet went through it, through the house, and exited the other side. Killing 3 people inside from the shrapnel. I let him finish his story then left. Said something to my friend a couple days later and he said the guy was full of it....as if it wasn't obvious.

I've never once met any vet of any war who would talk about his time in combat. They want to forget what they saw. A real vet will tell you that the ones who talk the most, did the least.

My experience is quite different. I've met many vets who've openly discussed their involvement and combat experience, including Vietnam and Iraq.

I work with a guy who was awarded two Silver Stars in Vietnam. I worked with him and talked guns often for seven years before he spoke a peep about his action over there. That's the only vet I've known who spoke of his action. The others I've known have all disengaged themselves from conversations about their actions during wartime.

I've never met a "sniper."

I've got a neighbor (25+ years) who is an Army vet from the Vietnam era. He was a Chinook crew chief, I believe. We have a few beers every now and then, and have traded experiences from combat more than once. After a few years, i noticed Roy was recycling MY OWN war stories back to me, except starring him. Pitiful.
