President Bush better get busy with his guest worker program. I don't know why Congress hasn't passed it - it's such a good plan.

Diplomats from Mexico and Central America on Monday demanded guest worker programs and the legalization of undocumented migrants in the United States, while criticizing a U.S. proposal for tougher border enforcement.

Meeting in Mexico's capital, the regional officials pledged to do more to fight migrant trafficking, but indirectly condemned a U.S. bill that would make illegal entry a felony and extend border walls.

"Migrants, regardless of their migratory status, should not be treated like criminals," they said.

The countries represented at the meeting _ including Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize and Panama _ created a working group to design a regional policy to avoid migrant abuse and to follow the course of the legislation.

"There has to be an integrated reform that includes a temporary worker program, but also the regularization of those people who are already living in receptor countries," Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez said.

Derbez has called the measure _ which passed the U.S. House of Representatives last month but still must go before the Senate _ "stupid and underhanded," but was somewhat more restrained on Monday, saying "it's not the Mexican government's position to tell the U.S. Senate what to do."

The U.S. proposal has caused widespread resentment in Mexico, where some have accused President Vicente Fox's administration of not being assertive enough in opposing it. Fox has called the bill shameful.

Mexicans working in the United States are a huge source of revenue for Mexico, sending home more than $16 billion in remittances in 2004, Mexico's second largest source of foreign currency after oil exports according to the country's central bank.

Fox's spokesman, Ruben Aguilar, defended the administration's record on Monday, telling reporters that migration has declined in recent years, though official figures show it remains at historically high levels.

Aguilar also said migrants "don't emigrate because they lack work, but rather for a series of other reasons, cultural reasons or better living conditions."

If thye enter this country illegally then they are criminals. In fact quite a few of them are criminals before they get here.

on the news tonight, they interviewed some of the protestors while our governor talked about her new plan for the immigration problem. one woman said "it is not a crime to be in this country illegally."

the governor says she will go after companies that hire illegals, what actually happens remains to be seen.

How can a woman this incompetent go after anything?
Yes when the faucet is running I shut the water off to the house to solve the problem. Hence no water to the faucet it will not leak right?
Lets see, go after the companys that hire illegals? It sounds like a never ending source of revenue for the government from continuously fining companys that hire illegals.
Tell mexico/illegals to go :cuss: themselves!!!:fire:

Why on earth should they care whether it's a felony, or indeed even illegal at all to cross the border? The US .gov and it's sheeple will still turn a blind eye and welcome them in to do our sub standard roofing jobs. What's national security worth in the face losing our cheap lettuce?

Fox and his ilk just want more of the Molle' sauce for themselves.

Aguas! Aguas!

It appears that Mexico and Central America believe they have more to say about what life ought to be like in the U.S. than American citizens. This is more than macho posturing, it is a preview of the international tyranny that various entities have planned to overrule our own sovereignty. We had better wake up to the full scope of this threat.

It's about the Rule of Law

We must vigilantly enforce the law or we will cease to be a country governed by the rule of law.

If you haven't figured it out yet, there are people in this world who want what you have and are more than willing to take it away from you.

I'm not talking about the drug mob or robbers in your house. I'm talking about access to health care, a free public education, access to labor markets, etc....

There's not an infinite supply of any of these things anywhere. But there's pretty darn near an infinit demand for them. When demand outstrips supply, the price of everything you take for granted will quickly exceed your ability to pay for it. (accept for the "chosen ones"....movie stars, pro. athletes and politicians).

One of the most fundamental responsibilities of government is to secure the national borders and carefully regulate immigration.

And in my opinion...

Just because my retired father in AZ wants to pay $4/hr vs. $14/hr to get his grass cut, or because the NY tourist want to pay $100/night instead of $200/night at the hotel, or because I prefer to pay $2 for my O.J. instead of $4, that doesn't justify turning a blind I, sacrificing the rule of law, opening up the flood gates and letting the world's infinite demand suck this country dry.... until where just as poor as the place they came from.

my $.02

On one hand, most rank and file Republicans and Democrats support the idea of enforcing borders and choosing whom we allow to immigrate. On the other hand, the plutocrats just love the idea of lots and lots of illegal immigration. It drives down wages, and the workers can't complain.

Don't worry, The President has a plan!

Those clowns need to smell what they are shoveling. As I understand it, illegal immigration from the Central American countries north into Mexico will get you killed if caught.

"Yep, give us a guest worker program, amnesty for all those in the country, dual citizenship, full govt. benefits, birth citizenship, but don't even think about closing the border you racists. We won't stand for it."
Those that should be targeted IMO are those that hire the illegals. They are never gonna give up the free worker programs they enjoy. Other US taxpayers pay a frightful price for the subsidies required for the "low wage" workers. It is paid in taxes, lost hospitals, school crowding and diminished education support for citizens, CRIME and attendant costs, and extreme yet underrecognized loss of national unity. There is a growing base for an insurgency in place that Mexico intends to put into use. It is well known that Americans won't stand up for anything anymore, and if you yell loud enough, the Americans will give you anything you ask for.

Americans have become pretty apathetic about a lot of things, but one sure way to wake them up is for other countries to start DEMANDING and THREATENING. Maybe this is exactly what we need.

As a taxpayer, I feel much like a Lake Trout with a Lamprey eel draining my blood when it comes to illegals and the border. And btw someone wanted to annex Mexico - are you nutzo? No personal offence ment but we have plenty of welfare problems as it is.

Mexicans working in the United States are a huge source of revenue for Mexico, sending home more than $16 billion in remittances in 2004, Mexico's second largest source of foreign currency after oil exports according to the country's central bank.

Let's see, anchor babys, free medical care & welfare, and politicans who have failed on the border. What a warm fuzzy feeling ain't it - pilgrim.

In New Orleans, the french built a levey to block the water. But the water knew where to go, right around it. But Im thinking hey that $16b could help pay for a nice border fence as a start anyway.

We have enough Mexicans here, why can't we legalize the ones that are here already, put them in reservations (i.e. Indians), limit them to ONE child each, and call it good.

$16 billion per year, eh?

Is that based on the official estimate of 14 million in the US? Interestingly enough, NC had an official estimate of illegal border jumpers resident within the state of 300,000 illegals. The state just finished a detailed study // estimate of the illegal population and discovered that the figure was actually >600,000 illegals. Off by a factor of merely 2:1.

If NC is typical, the actual population in the US is 28 million +. Curiously enough Goldman Sachs did a study of the underground economy and concluded the actual illegal population is actually 30 million.

Mexico is getting $32 Billion + annually if its getting a dollar.

It appears that Mexico and Central America believe they have more to say about what life ought to be like in the U.S. than American citizens. I've been hopping up down saying illegal immigration has a whole host of issure wrapped around it. One of which is national sovereignty which we are ceding to international trade organizations. NAFTA, CAFTA, and down the road FTAA. These agreements combined with the pressure applied by basketcases like Mexico are gasoline and fire when it comes to US sovereignty.
