Detroit. um... Dogg.
so, in another thread, we settled on a date (Sunday, April 25th), but seemed to come up with three possible venues. let me know where ya'll want to have it at. the only one of these I've personally been to is Pontiac Lakes, and it seemed pretty nice, to me, but I've heard about the federal land area being pretty cool, too. don't know anything about Island Lakes.

other thread: can be found here also has pictures of the fed. land in Lapeer, for reference.

I have absolutely no idea where Island Lake is (pictures look nice though)... MapQuest tells me there's 10 hits for Island Lake, MI also.

Could somebody hit me upside the head with a clue stick and gimmie a picture of where it is on the hand? Thumb, pinky, palm? I'm lost.

GB, To get to the Island Lake range take I-96 east to the Kensington road exit (Exit 151). From there cross Kensington Road on the I-96 Service drive/Grand River and go about 3/4 mile (give or take. my memory fails me) and you'll see a sign on the right side for IL park and shooting range.

Its very close to Brighton and across the freeway from the Kensington Metro Park.

Range would be in the lower left corner of this map. South of the freeway.

I'm not going to be allowed in that county if I continue to misbehave. :)

I'll be there..I have a SAFR meeting (open to the public, btw.) scheduled the night before at the Island Lake club house with shooting before hand. Guess I know where I'll be spending my weekend. Darn. ;)

Detriot is too far!!! Also, I have plans for that day. but good luck in keeping that range open, I think we should close all those beaches, too much traffic noise!!!!! and all the loud kids, with their loud cars....and stereo's!!! See how the anti's like that one!!!!

If anyone can make it, we sure could use some folks to attend the Natural Resource Commission meeting on 4/1 in Lansing, in regards to the Island Lake Range.

As I have become the object of hate amongst those folks trying to get the range shut down, you'll get to hear them deride my hygiene and heritage publicly in front of state officials. Should be fun!

:)

Let me know if you need details or they're on our website. Scroll down to the section on Island Lake. There are also some good pictures of the range that Oleg took when he was here.

Unfortunately I wont be able to attened the shoot, my drivers license was suspended last week due to a medical condition. :fire: The state said I was be reevaluated and then a decision would be made about my driving ability but the only thing they did was to look over my papers from my medical doctor to see if they were filled out and then took my license and punched it.:banghead: Sooo here I am without a legal way to drive. Its a real bummer to have your 16 year old daughter take you to work on her way to school but she likes the idea of having the car but dosent like her dad not having his license. So maybe I can hook up the next time for a shoot.

:(

Where do you live? Maybe someone will be coming from that direction.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

I've never been to a "shoot." Nor have I ever been to Island Lake.

What should I bring? Are only shotguns allowed there? How much is admission? Food? Beverages? How long does it last? etc.?

I may be able to make it.:)

Michigander,
Island lake allows just about anything you'd like to bring, from rimfire to .50BMG. The target range is 25, 50 and 100 yards. You can target shoot with Shotguns, but it is slugs only. No shot allowed on the target range.

The Skeet/Trap/sporting clays do require that you use 7 1/2 shot or smaller and that your barrel be no shorter than 26"

Rates are:
Target Range - $4 / day
Skeet/Trap - $5 / round ($4 for members)
If you do not have a valid state park sticker on your vehicle you can buy one there or get the daily pass. Daily pass is $4

Sunday Hours are 10:00AM to 5:00 or 6:00 PM IIRC

I've pretty much left that day open so if someone would like to suggest a time. I've never been to a "shoot" either so I hope this is pretty informal. Just show up, run-what-ya-brung, maybe get to shoot some other members stuff, and meet some good folks.

yeah, my thought for the whole thing was a pretty informal meetup.

I guess we could meet about 12pm? shoot until whenever. I don't know if people are expecting some structure to this or not, since I've never been to one of these, either. obviously, it seems as though y'all have decided on Island Lakes as the venue, so I guess I should make a new thread confirming this shindig, with details.

Is noon ok for everyone? obviously, you could show up a bit later, what with other commitments, and people will still be there. I'm not one to leave in a 1/2 hour, myself. I figured this would be more or less an all-day affair. we could even go to dinner afterwards, if anyone's interested.

let me know if noon is good. after I get a couple responses, I'll post a new thread with all the info as confirmed.

If anyone can make it the day before, too, we're going to have most of the candidates for the 7th district US house come tell us their outlook on RKBA and why we should vote for them..also, a judicial candidate from Livingston County, another candidate from Flint. Jim Simmons will be there to answer all those nagging little legal questions regarding gun ownership and the guy who leases Island Lake will be discussing the situation there.

The details are still being worked out, but it should be interesting/informative. The meeting is at the Island Lake Club House 4/24 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm.

Well, I've been linked here a couple times in the past, and then watched the monster thread unfold about the gun industry immunity bill. When I saw this thread, I figured it was time to sign up.

Count me in for the 25th, and noon is good. Any earlier and the previous night's activities might impede. One question though, are there any restrictions on rounds per magazine or speed of shooting? I do mostly pistol, but I'm finding only Peters in roseville to be double-tap friendly.

Barb- I think I'll try and show up on the 24th, I still can't get used to seeing progun politicians.

Dorin- If you're between the waterford/pontiac area and island lake I'd be happy to pick you up on the way.

Thanks Tenn, I'm at about union lake rd and commerce rd. Kind of the borders of commerce, waterford, and walled lake.

10 Ring -Thanks for the offer but I live about a stones throw from IN just south of highway US12. I am trying to get my brother to come so I can ride with him-he lives just inside Hooiserland. The gesture is grealtly appreciated though.:D

are there any restrictions on rounds per magazine or speed of shooting?
6 rounds per magazine with a minimum of 3 seconds between shots so don't plan any double taps. With pistols depending on the RO they may ask you to load one round a few times and show you can hit the target before they want you to load six. This is a nice facility however sometimes the RO can be a PITA, but at least it keeps thing fairly safe for a public range. Unfortunately I have a family event this day, so I won't be able to join you all. I highly recomend the Sporting Clays if you have never tried it :D

Please bring targets

I just got back from a morning of shooting at Island Lake's rifle range. While signing in I overheard a conversation between the RO and another shooter. It looks as though budget cuts will be effecting some aspects of the rifle range. The range, 'til now supplied you with as many 100 yard targets you'd like to hang at one time. They now ask that you only take two per round of shooting.
In the event that the state no longer supplies targets you will be required to bring your own. Please keep this in mind April 25th.
