Even in a combat zone it's rarely be acceptible to fire without seeing a weapon.

And this is happening on the streets of the U.S.?! Thank the good Lord there were no children in the back of the van.

Apparently a cruiser had been shot at in the same neighborhood previous to this "incident". Glad to hear the driver of the hoopty wasn't harmed by the inept cops.

There's not a room usually between the seat and the firewall of vehicles but you bet I'd find a way to fit if I was the guy in the van.

As for the officers' conduct, rather unacceptable.

Cops shouldn't be shooting unless they have an clear threatening target. Bad things happen with stray bullets.

Not to be the starter of an argument, so if this interpreted as that, please delete it:

What if the driver of the van had been armed, and had fired back?

Well if he fired back at the police, then he's a criminal. If the cops are shooting at me, you'd better believe I'm not returning fire. I'm staying down and making it as obvious as possible that I'm not a threat. Once everything is calmed down, and I'm talking with the cops, that's the time to figure out that I'm not the BG.
But as to the OP, yes, those cops are idiots. They have no business on the police force. I mean seriously, they shot out their own windows as they were getting out of the car. How do you do that without trying?

    Depends, probably dead,
but it would, in most places, be self defense, if they kept shooting, if they shot twice and stopped, then the threat isn't there

A cop used to say that we security guards were too "rough" on the lowlifes and whackjobs that we tossed out of the casino I worked at. He even whined to his Sergeant about it when he came in to cart off someone we had arrested for assaulting an employee. The idiot wanted to fight, and we gave him what he wanted. He wasn't hurt badly, just banged up with a broken nose. The sergeant pretty much ignored him. He told us we were "out of control", and needed to "control ourselves".

About a week later, on his way home from work, on his motorcycle, an old couple in their motorhome cut him off, and he emptied the mag on his S&W 59 into the back of it. Nobody was hurt, just terrified. The county paid them off, and the cop lost his job. Of course, a few weeks later, he was working in a casino as a security guard, a supervisor, no less.
