sawdeanz; I think Remington makes reduced recoil loads for the 308: 150 grn @ 2300 or 2400 fps, if I remember correctly.
I've used a sportered Yugo M24/47 in 8 mm mauser to take deer (2), but I took the 1909 Argentine Cavalry Carbine in 7.65 x 53 mauser this year, got skunked.
    Better luck next year!

Many years ago I was a guest on my father-in-law's deer lease in west Texas. I brought an M1 rifle, the only rifle I owned at the time as a poor college student. I was the butt of a lot of jokes the evening I arrived there, with all of the other members carrying nice scoped rifles.

However the laughing stopped the next day as I was the only one to take a deer on opening morning. With iron sights on a Garand. I was very pleased, but haven't done that again.

I've taken many a deer with iron sights -- back on the ranch, I always carried a Winchester Model 94 in the saddle boot and shot many a deer while out looking for cattle in the woods.

I used my 2A1 Ishapore to take deer & the only wild hog I have seen here. I have used my SKS to take deer also. I have a M91/39 that I would love to try out sometime. The 2A1 was scoped, but the SKS was open sights. The SKS is a good brush gun. The 2A1 is best from a stand.

Oh, it's accurate and zeroed nicely... I just haven't had a clean shot on a critter hunting with it. I must smell too good for the critters

I have killed 5 deer in the past two years with my 91/30. I have a nice 30/06 BAR and a Model 70 Winchester chambered in 270, the Jack O'Connor special. Neither of the beauty queens have killed a deer in the past 5 years. Changes in game laws have made it hard to find a place to hunt with a rifle. Landowners know you can easily kill a deer at 200 yards with a 12ga sabot. For that reason they will not give you permission to hunt with a rifle. The deer I shot with the 91/30 were from the loft of my barn. When hunt on other peoples property I use my Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel and Hornady 300gr SST sabots. I am not going to attempt educate a landowner. I am going to get permission to hunt with a shotgun. I am hunting on a lot of land for free. I have nothing to complain about.

One farmer that lets me hunt around 2,400 acres has tried to lease the hunting rights. Hunting clubs want to dictate to him how they are going to hunt his land. Hunting rights bring $7 an acre. $7 an acre is not worth any trouble when you run a multimillion dollar operation.
