Just curious, if you were going to sign up for the military right here and now what would you sign up for? Pretend there is either a draft or you expect a draft to come soon due to North Korea or Iran. Given that info what branch would you sign up for and why?

(Please forgive me mods I'm drunk! But yes, this is a serious question for not only me but one of my younger brothers right now.)

-edited by sober wacki to remove quasi cursing spelled in 3l337, and yes I have used the mule word in front of my grandmother.

First thing I'd do differently than my actual service is get a college degree and go in as a officer. There's a whole world of difference in what is available to officers.

No question. Mobile Infantry. Is there a more Honorable way to go into combat than hand to hand, armed with the best weapons one's civilization can devise?
p.s. I hope A$$ is legal if it's not please *** it out mods. Please forgive me mods I'm drunk!
:scrutiny: Not that that is license to be profane without cause. Jusszzcausewevvehadaaafewbreeewwwsdooosenoootmeeandont mean we can give leave to reason. Else we become little better than the basest animal.

So whats your poison? Fermented or distilled? ;)

36 yrs. ago I completed college and went in as an officer to go to pilot training. I got the opportunity to fly what at that time was the hottest a/c in the western inventory, the F-4 Phantom II. I would love to be able to start over and fly the current jets. They are light years ahead of the old iron.

I'd do the same thing I did in '69...join the Navy. Sea service of some sort is a family tradition dating back to the Civil War.
I'd probably stick with the enlisted ranks When I was in back then, I made it to Petty Officer 1s Class (E-6).

U.S.M.C. 1977-1981. It's the only thing I know. Go artillery. In the rear with the gear and in later life you don't listen to the wife and kids because they think you don't hear them.

Well.....

I second the 'Finish College, Be an Officer' concept.......more money, more responsibilities, better opportunities and living conditions...and they pay for the college(which ain't cheap)!
I'd go Marine(again)....but have no problem with any other service. The Army probably has more opportunities since its larger.....But having "Leader Of Combat Marines' on the resume sounds quiet chilling!
I went in cause I had too(fire burned down the house, 25 guns, and everything else! But No one died!!). Guaranteed Infantry(wanted the training and the Bonus!)...got some money for college, and a taste of the world, got to shoot cool guns and blow **** up, met my best friends, had some really tough times, and really good times. But they are the times I look back on as the best years...cause I was doing something important and very real.
Whatever branch you chose....
Thanks For Serving...and go kick some Extremist Ass!
Semper Fi

PS:Take alot of pictures....you'll want 'em later

If you are a "learn a skill/rear with the gear type", Air Force, Navy, Army. If you are a front lines type, USMC infantry, Army infantry (can get a guaranteed shot at Ranger...don't quit).

As far as the officer comment, I've been both. Enlisted/NCOs get to do the fun stuff (work;) ). Officers get better pay and get to "think" (some), but primarily plan training, operations and serve on staffs. Even as a platoon leader/copmany commander you are planning the training, not teaching it or necessarily even participating if it is at a lower level. If you're itching to serve, go enlisted. If you decide to stay, you'll know then whether you want to be a traitor (become an officer:D ) or stay enlisted.

My "rear w/ gear" comment isn't derogatory either, I've been both. Some people aren't cut out for infantry, those who are know it because they're (we're) crazy and like misery.:uhoh:

Think of career opportunities afterwards. I chose the USAF in 1998, went in as a crew chief. I thought aircraft mechanics would make a good career afterwards, turns out there aren't too many civvy C-130s:D It was definately a piece of cake, physically and mentally. If you're looking for something fun, somewhat safe, and with good meals, go AF. Plus at Pope, we got to watch the 82d jump out the back of our plane. Though the drone from those Allison T56A-15s will get old after a few hours! You want combat, there's always USAF combat control or para rescue.

wacki,
There you go, pushing the envelope again. If you were/are sober enough to question whether not it was "legal" , why not just "***" it out yourself ?
(Or are you trying to impress us that you are drinking?)

Oh Yeah... Go Navy!

I am way too broke and fat now to join back up, but if I could, I would like to go into a training environment. Not as a DS but rather an AIT instructor.

I did sevreral jobs while in. While not the most glorious, I drove fuel tankers for a while. Big 5000 gallon tractor/trailor jobs. They are a real challenge to drive off road and be sneaky about it. Two of my AAMs are specifcally for beeing quite good at it in some rather poor conditions. I wold love to teach a fresh batch of drivers the fine art of tactical supply delivery.

I don't like officers so i wouldn't go that route personally. i personally believe that officers should have to get at least ssg before they can even think about becomming an officer, then go to school. no matter if they had a degree already or not!

but if i was to do it all over again i wouldn't change anything, U.S Army infantry. if i wasn't an infantry type, then i would go airforce, they have it pretty easy, especially the enlisted side of the house!

If I had it to do over, I would go Navy.

I was stationed at Eielson AFB, Alaska in the mid 70s. We maintained two F-4s on alert. They may be old technology, but to this day there is not a more beautiful aircraft to see in flight!

Coast Guard

The Coast Guard serves world wide and small boats rock.
I did my time in the Army.
Coast Guard is the best kept secret in the military.

I went in the USMC in 55 when I was 17, Army National Guard in 63 and Army helicopter flight school in 1964.

Whatever you do you should be looking at how it will benefit you in the future.

The USMC taught me how to hit a man at 500 yards with a M1 rifle and work on trucks.

The Army taught me how to fly helicopters.
Which gave me a good way to make a living the rest of my life.

While I wouldn't take anything for my military experience, I'd advise a young man to join the Navy or Air Force and work at getting an education that will benefit them the rest of their life.

And yes, I've been a USMC Sergeant and a Army officer.
Being a officer is better.:D

After four years Air Force and 17 years Coast Guard, I can say that of the two, the Air Force treats its people better. I'm not bitter in the least, I had a great time in the CG and small boats do indeed rock but there are better opportunities in the AF.

Good luck what ever you do and be sure and have at least a few sober moments prior to signing anything.

I AM signing up this next week after a loong time of legal hoops to jump through, USMC infantry open (reserves) guarenteed trip to the sand box in the future. Expect a thread when i sign the dotted line, just to let everyone know

You'd be surprised. There are some things available to the enlisted not to the officer corps, and vise versa.

Become an officer if you want to manage people, go enlisted if you want to lead them.

However no is not the time to join the Air Force. We're going through the equivilant of corporate downsizing and reducing our numbers by 40%. If you do join, you'll be getting jobs where the AF needs people, and not what YOU want to do. Give it a few years before the AF, or join the AF guard/reserves.
