White Walker: I wonder how many here realize just how rare a Rod bayonet M1903 is? Is it still in .30-03?

highpower, that's a Great representative collection of U.S. Martial arms you've got! Way to go!

Amazingly, I've found that the vast majority of shooters and collectors don't know what a Rod Bayonet 1903 Springfield is. Even among those who might own a standard 03, there is a minority who will recognize a RB 1903. Anyway, I've read that there might be around 100 of them left in the world. I don't know. Their scarcity along with the relatively low number of folks who recognize what they are is probably the reason why I was able to pay so little for it, just over $2,000.00, which is still a lot of cash to me.
Yes, it most certainly is in 30-03 caliber. The bore is pristine too, which was a surprise to me.
I'm happy that you recognize it and like it highpower!

Two grand is certainly a lot of money, but I think you stole that rifle at that price. I love the '03 Springfields and had a pretty decent collection at one time. I sold them in order to buy a house, but at today's prices, I doubt if I will ever be able build another collection like I had.

Thanks. You've got some great stuff too! Do you think that you'll be looking for a flint lock musket in the future?
I never would've thought forty years ago that the collectors value of good collectable 1903's would go up twenty times what they were. The prices today are keeping a lot of collectors from buying any. That's too bad. I guess that the guys with the deep pockets have kept the ball rolling on the prices going up. I can remember when $150.00 would buy a very fine and original rifle.

I am indeed looking for unconverted early US flintlocks. They are very hard to find and somewhat expensive. What I want the most is a Model 1795 musket.

Those are my favorites. I've been lucky enough to own two in my life. both bought when they were around $750.00 and $900.00.
Sometimes you can still find a sleeper. I'd even take a U.S. surcharged French 1766. Heck, someday I might sell my 03's and put the money into Revolutionary War muskets.
Hey, don't forget about the 1842 smoothbore musket. You'll have to have one of them as well!

I was also amazed at seeing your Model 1903 Rod Bayonet Rifle; that's definitely one rare bird! I remember reading somewhere that President Teddy Roosevelt strongly disapproved of the rod bayonet and that's why it was changed to the more conventional bayonet design.

That's what I've heard too. They weren't produced longer than 15 months before production stopped. There were about 67,000 made at Springfield Armory and possibly only Serial Number 1 completed at Rock Island which possibly hadn't fully assembled any more pending a decision about altering the bayonet design. What happened to all of the many thousands of parts at Rock Island waiting to be put together isn't known to me. The bolt on my RB 1903 was made at Rock Island and still has its original polish and traces of Niter Blue on the handle. It came with another rifle I'd bought and when I found the RB in an auction that had a much later bolt, I went ahead and got the Rod Bayonet 03.

Hangfire, that's a nice mosin in post#102....but I'm not sure it is the most accurate milsurp ever made. My Ross Mklll may have been a failure as a military rifle, but it will shoot M.O.A. out to four hundred yards....

Well I don't know how I managed to miss jumping in on this a long time ago, but will do so now.
I've collected military weapons for 60 yrs, started when I bought a K98k to hunt deer with from the unkle who brought it back - I still have that rifle.
I'll start with my "non military" gunz and go on from there over several posts.
Civil war and cowboy gunz are first. The civil War are all reproductions. The cowboy gunz are all 38/40 cal.
