Two questions:

1. What websites are available, if any, for buying a Garand or Springfield '03?

2. I saw a reference to the CMP store(s). Where is it or where are they?
 
Here are a couple of places that build quality Garands from GI receivers -

Fulton Armory

DGR custom guns

They aren't low-cost, like CMP, because the product has been overhauled and has a warranty.

(Think '68 Mustang bought at junkyard vs. '68 Mustang from a custom shop.)

I respectfully disagree with your analogy of CMP rifles as "bought at a junkyard."

CMP overhauls the rifles they receive for function, reliability, and safety, and grades them for wear and appearance according to stated guidelines. Any rifle sold as a shooter (some may be explicitly sold as non-working) or any part of it, can be returned to them for repair or replacement if it doesn't function correctly or safely. No questions asked.
CMP's customer service is legendary.

Tinpig - I'm not trying to Pelosi in your porridge here, but "CMP overhauls the rifles they receive for function, reliability, and safety......" isn't quite correct. CMP INSPECTS the rifles, and also test fires the Garands, (I'm not sure about the test firing for Carbines). As far as I know, the only CMP rifles that might qualify for the "overhaul" description are the Special Grade Garands that they rebuild before sale.

All that said, I agree with your objection to analogy of CMP rifles as "bought at a junkyard." I am the satisfied owner of over a dozen of the CMP's fine firearms.

No they are not low cost but overpriced. If you buy a Service Grade Garand from CMP and do all the stuff Fulton Armory does to their SG it will cost you a lot less than the $1700 Fulton charges. You can buy a collector grade from CMP and have all correct components that was rebuilt by the military for about $1200. CMP does not offer a warranty true but I've seen them send parts ot even exchange the rifle if something wasn't right. Fulton's claim of expect 2.5 MOA is not hard to do as I've never seen a CMP SG that won't do that.

Your analogy should be, "well maintained original 68 Mustang vs fully restored". Once again a big price diffrence between those two.
 
Yeah, CU74, I see your point about the difference between overhaul and inspect. What I meant was that either during that inspection or later, they will replace any parts that don't function correctly.
As you said, I believe the carbines are not test-fired while the Garands are.

"...a dozen..." CMP rifles. Guess I've got a ways to go.

By way of a heads up...just got my
CMPUpdate email this morning...they are receivinig up to 10,000 orders a month (up from 2-3000 a month) and are running significantly behind. 100 days minimum to fill orders. Lake City 30-06 sold out.

Get em while the gettin's good.

I'm happy with my 3 Garands, the 03, the M1917 and my M1 Carbine I got from them.

As far as my "...a dozen...", perhaps I have been accumulating a little longer. I may also have gotten a bit carried away with the "need" to have a Carbine from every manufacturer (except for the uber-expensive Irwin Pederson), but they sure are fun to shoot.
