Mini-14 Parts Issue

This post is a spin-off of the thread about "How to Choose a Fighting Rifle".

My thought is, while Ruger is said to not sell spare parts for the Mini-14, does anybody make good aftermarket parts? I see accessories all over the place, but what about bolts, extractors, aftermarket trigger groups and what all else? 10/22 has all those other spare/aftermarket parts available- why not Mini-14?

Do a google search for "Clark Custom Guns" and "Accuracy systems international". I don't know of anyone who makes extractors & bolts or pretty much any aftermarket part like you would see for a 10/22. However they do sell sweet mini parts.

My guess, no demand. My mini-14, made in '89 has never had a part break in all the years I have been using it (even with 'gasp' steel cased wolf). But maybe I am wrong, perhaps Ruger does a good business fixing all the broken mini's. I heard that they won't sell bolts due to headspace issues (each one is specially fitted), maybe the lawyers got to them on the other parts. Or they might just like to screw the average citizen/consumer as much as they possibly can. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you . I mean here is a platform that could compete quite well in the market place, being held back by a few problems caused by the factory and ignored for years: stiffer barrel, better sights, and available mags. It is like they don't want to make money.

Out of the many gun companies in the U.S., Ruger is one of the biggest ones that turns a profit and is therefore a huge target for lawsuits (since if they were successfully sued, they'd be able to pay). Therefore, they are exceptionally cautious about anything that could potentially lead to someone hurting themselves. This might include selling bolts that could be mismatched by someone who didn't care to measure them.

I think its pretty funny that with a little work, an SKS could be the Mini-14's equal and in some cases exceed it.

All a company would have to do is figure out how to feed an SKS from AK mags and put purty wood on em. If they could rechamber them for 5.56mm and use STANAG mags, they'd never be able to keep em in stock.

Lots of parts available. Google can help. Any competant gun smith can work on a Mini.
