Minimum Number of Guns a Gunperson Should Have

Kind of equates to "what is the minimum amount of freedom a person should have?" The minimum ( and the maximum) number of guns a gunperson should have is the amount they choose to. Not what the state, the feds, or some politico says.

I think you're missing the point of this thread. It's not a political thread. It's just a fun thread talking about what kinds or categories of guns we think should be in everyone's collection. You're taking it way too seriously.

I think you can cover most situations with six guns:

  • .22LR rifle or carbine
    12-gauge pump-action or semi-auto shotgun
.30 caliber rifle (pick your flavor)
    .22 handgun
    subcompact pistol or snubby revolver (i.e. .380ACP, .38SP, 9mm)
    compact to full-frame pistol or revolver (i.e. 9mm, .40 S&W, .45ACP)

How Many?

I'd say at least one in each caliber.
Two to four in; .22, .38, 9mm, .357, .40, .45, .308, .223, .30-06, 7mm-08:)

The thread is MINIMUM. There have been discussions about minimum collection before. My opinion:

-.22lr rifle
-Centerfire rifle.
-Shotgun.
-A handgun.

That covers the bases pretty well.

There's a limit????? But I just saw this sweet . . . .

Budget & "other" responsibilities or hobbies generally dictate, but I have all of the fly rods I desire & guns are my only other hobby . . . fortunately, I have never fallen prey to the "golf" addiction . . .

Daughter: "What do you need another gun for, Dad?"

Son: "Cool!"

My favorites , all the others could be done without if needed ....

A .223 and a .45acp.

But then , for added fun , I have a Ruger 10/22 & a few other .22's
A RomAK
A Winchester 1894 ( mines a .44mag scout )

Walther P22
Colt Mustang .380
Sig 228 ( 9mm )
Hammerless .38 snubbie

And of course a drawer full of holsters , slings , AR15 parts , ....

A reloading bench , press , supplies & stock.

A shelf with a few scopes , mounts , rings , red dots.

I almost forgot the 2 12 gauge pump shotguns and .410 autoloader

And I guess the blackpowder side by side shotgun. ... a few pelletguns , an airsoft replica of my Sig .... an NRA membership , and all the damn junkmail they send me , a half dozen semi recent copies of Guns & Ammo & Handgunner ...

Too much time on the internet ... not quite enough time at the range , plans to build my own range in Maine. ...

1.

unless it's me. I have 3 categories, but am thinking of adding a 4th.
CC Handgun: I'm a smaller guy, so smaller gun with same size boom gets more points...
"Stand-off" Rifle: No distance is too great!
Lawnmower: Just how much lead can I get downrange is no time?

My minimum changes with what activities I'm active in. Currently, handguns: 22LR, 357mag, 41 mag, 40S&W
Long guns: 22LR, 223, 270, 12 ga shotgun

Absolute minimums:

1) general purpose .22lr, handgun or rifle, 5000 rds
2) military caliber and pedigree service sized handgun, 1000 rds
3) significant caliber carry gun. 500 rds
4) military caliber and pedigree autoloading rifle, 1000 rds
5) spare significant caliber rifle OR shotgun 500 rds

To the fullest extent allowed by law in your jurisdiction, at least one gun should be unpapered/minimally papered.

I think 3 would cover almost any situation where a gun is actually needed. A high cap 9mm pistol, a .308 rifle, and a 12 gauge.
I'd get a CZ SP01 or P01, an Ar-10, and a 870.

Wow! I dunno what that exact number might be.
In the hundreds, I'm sure ... most likely in the thousands.

But why put finite limits on it? As many as you want. No limit.

10/22
AR-15
30 30 win model 94
40 cal M&P
91/30 Moisin

O wait thats all I got so far.

To be a TRUE gun person, you must have variety. Otherwise you're just shooting a small spectrum of what's out there. You'd just be a tinkerer, hobbyist, nooby, half-timmer, whanabe posser.:what:

Therefore, to be a valid, multi-talented gun person, you MUST have:

.22 pistol and rifle
9mm pistol
.38 revolver
.357 revolver
.44mag revolver
.45acp pistol
.223 rifle
.308/.30-06 rifle
.45-70 rifle
12 gauge pump
12 gauge O/U or SxS

I believe it's in the rule book somewhere.

I think one rifle, one shotgun, and one handgun per adult member of the house, plus a plinker, (22LR) is a good start. If I had those I would not think myself lacking the basics.

If I had:
one ideal handgun,
one ideal shotgun,
one AR (5.56NATO)
one AK/SKS (7.62x39)
one 7.62NATO rifle
one .22LR plinker/trainer
one .22lr handgun

THEN, I would have to seriously question every firearms purchase, and wonder if my money would not be better spent on ammo, training, accesories, etc.

And that's purely from a standpoint of what things I think I should have, not considering what has collector value.

If you want to be an appleseed-esque ambassador of Firearms Enthusia, then having a wheelgun, bolt gun, lever action, and various example of the basics would be essential for introducing new shooters to what is available.

Patriot Brewer , I missed that rue somewhere , but now I need a S&W .44mag and maybe a levergun 45-70 .... I'll explain it to the Missus.

I'd say at least four.

A 22 rimfire.
A centerfire rifle
A centerfire pistol
A shotgun.

I'm heavy on 22's and pistols. Ok on shotguns. I need a couple of rifles. I'm thinking Mosin-Nagant's.

Or as I tell my wife. "Don't think of the guns we have. Think of the ones we don't have."

At least one of each.....

oh, and a spare too.

I guess technically 1 is the minimum starting out for a gun person unless they
buy their first one with several companions to keep it company.

Making this as a strictly IMO. Mind you this is minimum.

Handguns
1) 1 SA revolver (.22) Ruger Single Six
2) 1 DA revolver (.357) Ruger GP100
3) 1 Semi (9mm, .40, or .45) Poly or no?/CCW or HD?/Target?/Combo? Any quality one that
fits your bill.

Rifles
1) 1 Lever action (.357, 30.06, or .45-70) Winchester for the lighter, Marlin for the heaver.
2) 1 Semi (.223 or .308) Bushmaster or Saiga

Shotguns
1) 1 SxS (20ga) These tend to have too much personality for me to even try to suggest.
2) 1 pump (12ga) Remington/Mossberg/Winchester

Again IMO.

In no particular order:

1) Glock
2) 1911
3) Revolver
4) 12 gauge (there oh so versatile)
5) Hunting rifle
6) Something in rimfire
7) AR, AK, or SKS

Everything else is just an added bonus:)

I am missisg #3 and #7 but I am working on it. I am still new so I am sure my list of "minimums" will grow as I learn more.
