Wondering how Missouri Bullet's #1 and/or #2 Whitetail shoots out of a Microgrooved Marlin 336? I've heard mixed reviews of lead boolits (of any manufacturer) and Marlins, so I am looking for opinions first.

Also, what powder is a good choice for these bullets for Texas deer and small-to-medium hogs (no hogzillas, thank you) ~ yes, I have the manuals, but I want first-hand field experience on bullet/powder combos.

Thanks,

I'm not familiar with either of those bullets. Are they gaschecked? What type lube do they use? What is the sized bullet diameter?

I've gotten excellent accuracy from my Marlin .30/30's with cast bullets. They need to be at the very least .309". .310 is better, and I personnally use .311".

As far as powder, most any extruded type powder that has applicability to the .30/30 will do well.

For full power loads (only with gaschecked bullets), I found that IMR3031 and Reloader15 are outstanding.

For reduced power loads, Unique and Universal have been good. (7-10gr) For something of a mid-range loading, Alliant #2400 gives very good accuracy.(12-16gr).

My favorite bullet for the .30/30 is the Lee .309-150gr FNGC. Mine casts to about .312" @158grs, and I size it to .311 with a Hornady crimp-on gascheck and lube with either 50/50 Alox-beeswax lubes, or SPG.

28.5gr of IMR3031 gives about 2,100fps, and 30.0gr of RL15 gives about 2,250fps. I've taken deer cleanly with both charges. When my current supply of Remington 150 and 170gr CorLokts are gone, I'll never buy another jacketed bullet for the .30/30. My Lee 150 and 170gr FNGC moulds work THAT GOOD !

I had NO luck at all with those Whitetails out of my microgrooved Marlin. I found some Hunters Supply bullets sized to .311" that work perfectly. Of course, your mileage may vary.
